Jason,

What hill are you on about meeting at? Cross Inn roundabout or Llantrisant? I dont fancy the extra 10 Miles to the start or leaving early!!

Made it back eventually,

Locking cog on cassette had sheared off, manged to reverse what was left and use as a spacer to limp home!!

Thanks for the offer of help Harpo but knowing the ratio of sand to cement to make concrete wouldn't of helped!! ;D

Nearly got me to bite today but that was only because you did more moaning than my wife!!!

General Discussion / Re: Group Ride App
« on: March 13, 2017, 10:36:36 PM »
Andy,

Yes. If people logged into the App before leaving home you would be able to see who was on route, what group they were intending to ride with and where they currently are. As for the weather in Brackla is there any way to predict that?

General Discussion / Group Ride App
« on: March 13, 2017, 07:57:31 PM »
As part of an Open University course I am doing I have been asked to design an App.

My initial thought is for a group ride app. A brief outline would be as follows: You would log into a group (Pacers, Chasers, Amblers) you would then be able to see other riders who were also logged into the App on a common map. My rationale is that this would assist with split riders or lost riders. Both the ride leader and those lost would be able to see where they were.

I was also thinking about adding a bit of functionality into it (ie the ability for a rider to alert the group if they had a mechanical or flat tyre, and an elevated alert  if a rider was immobilized or injured).

Just need to gauge peoples thoughts and any ideas you may have on this?

PS. It could also include a button to alert the group when Harpo decides to go rogue of the front!!!!

You must have left exactly at 0945. Got there for 0947 and no sign!! Did the same route as last week but no sign of anybody. Got to Cafe velo at 1200 and left at 1225!! Did you guys do the normal route or something different?

Sorry about the lateness in response work got in the way!!

Email from Nic:

Hi Simon

Are you imagining a course at our workshop? If you're club members, we'd charge £55 per person (minimum of 4).

If would be higher if you wanted to incorporate electronic shifting or wheelbuilding in the content. To be honest, something like wheelbuilding is a day in itself.

It sounds like there's enough interest to get the ball rolling.

If people give me an idea of what they want to achieve, ie service of bike (brakes checked and toe'd in, headset checked, cranks and bottom bracket checked, chain wear checked and gears indexed). Because of the range of bikes available they don't stock all parts for all bikes so what might be advisable is if brakes are worn and bottom bracket is worn or has never been replaced then sourcing them before the day so that you have them ready to replace. If not we can still do the above but you might have to order the parts and fit later. If you want to look at your wheels it might also be advisable to order new bearings for these so that you can fit these when you remove the hub.

Let me know your ideas and I'll speak to John. I would probably say the best day would be a saturday morning?

Rgds.

Having just attended the Velo tech gold course at cycling training wales I can fully recommend the course to anybody wishing to learn more or even just learn!!

John and the team down at gabalfa industrial estate are all trained mechanics with years of experience. The company is a not for profit organisation and they are really keen on empowering people to reuse and maintain their bikes rather than just getting rid.

I also spoke to them about running some sessions for the club. He said they would be more than able to do that and could tailor sessions to suit. They have a fully equipped workshop for 7 - 8 people and can do servicing, wheel balancing, Bottom brackets, gear indexing and brakes etc. They would have to charge for any materials you use and there would be a small charge for using the facility. I would be more than willing to assist on the day if around.

Could be something we could offer new members or perhaps just those that want to service their bike without having to go to a shop but don't want to buy all the tools required.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Si.

Interesting article in the IET magazine if you want to understand why bigger tyres are better and what the pros are using.

Time Trials / Riders wishing to attend club 10M TT
« on: April 19, 2016, 07:12:24 PM »
Hello all,

I will be taking a group of 10 Army riders on a week of cycle training out of Brecon for the week of may 2nd - 6th. They are mixed age and experience group and I was hoping to introduce them to the world of TT. Would it be possible to bring them to the club TT on that thursday (5th May). I don't want to Hi jack the club event but if possible would like to show outside of crits etc what else is available. They would of course be all paying into the clubs coffers also!!!

Anybody wishing to ride with us that week (less the friday as we have the velodrome booked is more than welcome).

Just managed to get my hands on one of these and started to restore it. Have managed to get it back to a mechanically fully working condition. Now the fully restore starts.

Would be willing to bring it to a club night for those that may want to have a look or even give it a whirl???

Plenty of information on the internet about the history of the C5 for those that are interested. More importantly it was manufactured in Merthyr under licence by the Hoover factory.

Let me know if there is any interest as I work in Colchester during the week and commute back on a friday.

Sportives / "Dragons Spine"
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:12:30 AM »
Just wanted some advice or tips from anybody who may have done this.

Looking at putting together a ride from North Wales to South Wales. I have read a few articles and its often called the Dragons Spine.
It will be for a bunch or army lads who can hold 17 - 18 Mph comfortably.

Have any of the Oggies done this or parts of this? Any tips or advice greatly appreciated.

I chose North to South because it's all down hill?? Isnt it?

Cheers.
