Some amazing weekend performances !
« on: June 16, 2014, 08:16:25 AM »
In addition to the good set of rides in the Merthyr 10 on Saturday, can I draw your attention to some more amazing performances;

WWCL '100'  Rob Jones 4:26:31 PB  Jason S, 5:10:44 PB

Now you may have read my post about sustaining 19mph for 70 miles on Sunday (mostly on other people's wheels)..

Andy Harries did 231.4 miles for a 12hr race - that's 19mph average by himself !!     That's absolutely superb, chapeau!

(I wonder if it's the best ever, another Oggie all time best after Joe Beech in the '50')

That's slightly over 19mph I think. Great effort Andy, that must have hurt a lot...tell us about it? I recall Chris Mathews was always chasing 20mph for 12h but not sure he got it so yours could well be club record!

Did check CTT website last week and Rob is right Chris Matthew did do 240 miles. I was thinking that I wouldn't get anywhere near that and targeted 200 miles, so well pleased with 230.

Not an awful lot to say Rob except that it was total suffering, mentally ( looked at the time just after 10 am and thought WOW only another 9 hours to go!) and physically, after 6 hours almost constant on the tri bars the pain in neck and shoulder become too much and most of the second half was ridden on the normal bars. Left knee started to hurt after about 5 hours but that was overtaken by the pain in the wrists. Did I mention the chaffing?
Did manage to keep the effort going for the 12 hours. Probably started too quickly, doing 21.6mph for the first 5 hours or so but realised that I had to back off, combined with not being able to stay on the tri bars, pace went down to around the 18mph mark. (this was including a brief stop each lap to pick up fluid, food and a pee stop!)
Accepted the pace dropping off but worked out that I could keep it over 19, so that was a mental boost. Final ave on the garmin was 19.3mph.

Not sure I'll be rushing to enter another 12, at least not this year!!

This edit above of your 12 hour experience provides an almost perfect account of my 100 Andy. I averaged 22.6mph but was over 23mph on 65 miles at a point where I had done equal distance in each direction to Brecon and back. So pace fell off quite a bit for last section down to Carmarthen and back, with legs innsemi-cramp state and aero bars increasingly painfull to use. Not sure if the uncomfort is something that would go if you did it more or just cause injury. Everything is aching for me today though it sounds like, as one would expect, the 12 hour is another level again in pain and suffering. Not for me!

Well done to all you longer distance TT riders for last weekend, excellent performances, now we need more Oggies to get out and have a go.

Cheers Richard, 246 was a great effort.

The 12 is a mad event to even think about let alone plan for. I wasn't sure I was going to ride as I had to drive up to London and back on the Saturday, with the misses and ended up having to leave a second car in Newbury to stay overnight there.

As a result I hadn't thought about it too much, which wasn't a bad thing.

As for doing another one, knowing what it involves, maybe not...........................until next year!  ::)

I can't find the disc which has all the stuff from my old PC but an internet mooch produced:
2007 WCA 12hr, JPLH did an eye watering 361.491 miles.

I think the previous club record was held by Chris Davies.

I think that must be 261 as British record is only 312!

That's barely averaging over 25mph!

I guess there's not much incentive to go faster in a 12 hour cos your stuck for the day regardless! And that's why the 100 mile is a far tougher event.  ;)

A marshal at the start did warn me, "that whether you go easy or hard, it's still going to take you 12 hours"!
