New Wheels or New Bike?
« on: November 09, 2022, 08:59:33 AM »
Hi,

I have a Boardman SLR 8.9 C with rim brakes and Shimano 105.

Cycle to work scheme with a limit of £2500 is available - need to submit my application by the end of the week.

Can i have some suggestions please with regards to my options:

1. Upgrade wheels - Please suggest which ones as most look the same with huge difference in price. I have done a bit of research: A. Hunt wheels are not available through the C2W scheme. B. Ride Bike Wales have suggested Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 TLR with Pirelli P Zero race TLR 26-622.
2. Upgrade bike - Suggestions please.
3. Do nothing - It’s about the rider more that the kit. Maybe consider another option when I get more fitter🙂.

Thanks.

Steven

Hi there,

The Boardman is a good bike and you will probably be riding it all year around (with mudguards in the winter!). Unfortunately, winter is not kind to bikes and can ruin some good kit. It may be an idea to get it as is and then get some nice wheels for summer later next year. At your stage, getting out and riding a lot and enjoying yourself is what's important. We can advise on bike fit and clothing if you want to come to clubnight. (next one is the 14th November).

Alternatvely spend the £2500 on a new bike and keep the boardman as your 'winter bike'.
