December 19 : Bethlehem 2021
« on: December 07, 2021, 03:41:12 PM »
I'm going to put this up here early so you can plan (your excuses). Dependent on avoiding the next winter storm.

When we did this 2 years ago it was an 08:30 start, and it wasn't super bright when I got home so I'd suggest that again.

Would be really nice if this was a mixed, social ride. Not like I have a lot of knowledge of club traditions but this seems to be one. Last (and only time) I did this some of the chasers drove to Neath and did the ride from there, so there were at least enough of us to have someone stood in front of the village sign and someone take the picture.

Initial plan would be for coffee and cake(s) in Llandeilo, and another quick pitstop on the way back.

Route is here : https://www.strava.com/routes/3773326

Please post your intention to ride, especially so we can gauge a sensible pace. You will be forgiven for dropping out on the day if we have sideways snow.

Count me in subject to the weather and any reaction to my lazyitis booster the day before.

I'm up for it and happy to drive to Neath for the Chasers option again.

I can take at least one other person and dependant on borrowing bikes racks two or three.

Spoke to Richard Lewis and messages from Karl and Richard Bowmer suggest they are up for doing the Bethlehem ride from Neath.

Is anybody else interested in joining us from Neath?

Please post and we can arrange transport between us. Last time we did it, started at 9:00am in Neath. Pacers caught us by Rhos, so suggest we try a little harder this year!!

I’ve got a bike rack, but the one that goes on the back of the car, it takes 2 bikes. So I could take 1 with me. Andy/ Karl/ Rich - thoughts on this please. And is it winter bikes or racing bikes on Sunday?

Definitely winter bikes!  ;D

I have to drive anyway and have 2 racks so happy to pick up somebody in Bridgend area. Makes sense to share cars if possible

No disc wheels. Pointy helmets only permitted with a bauble attached, and tinsel. UCI sock regulations will be strictly enforced.

I won’t be there on Sunday.  Have a good one! Merry Christmas to all and look forward to catching up again in the New Year.

Good to see plenty of riders out today.

Sorry to have 'baled' but legs not up to it today and knew there was nothing but pain on the otherside of the black mountain!  :)

Saw you shoot past on your descent but assumed you were one of the lead pacers returning to ride back up with us (until you didn’t stop that is)

Just a quick summary of this year's Christmas ride.
I was at fault for getting myself lost (again) so missed most of the second-half, so please add your observations of seasonal mirth.
Nigel lead us out of Brackla and almost to Neath, ruining a lot of people's rather binary estimates in the clubs "How many miles will Nigel do on the front?" competition.
Good to see such a good turnout, -2C, thick fog and 100 miles, so we now know how to attract more riders.
Little disagreement on the precise route to Pontardawe, but Paul guided us calmly towards our target.
Extremely good weather once we started to get a bit of elevation towards Amanford, not a cloud in the sky and no wind; half-tidy to use the local vernacular.

Black Mountain preponderated over us as we spun up the "boring side" wondering if we'd ever catch the Chasers who'd set off from Neath sometime the previous month.
Everyone congregated for the traditional team photo by the slightly battered sign and not a ShakeDry in sight.
Llandeilo would have loomed like a citadel in the mist, if there had been mist, but none the less we climbed the hill in search of sustenance.
Lovely cafe that Mark B had researched and memorised the name, Dwt [1]. Coffee and cake all round.
Sugar and caffeine ingested we set off immediately for some gentle slopes to settle the stomach before the trundle home.

[1] It was called Diod.
