The cafe in Aberdare had better be open Sunday, I'll need time to prepare for that climb.... that is if my replacement chain turns up by saturday.

Been off bike since Majorca due to wrist injury. Seems little point now in holding on to any hopes of doing the Early Season Road Race I had entered Sunday... So if by then I can hold the handlebars I'll try and join you on the club run. I think the injury is a result of too much time on the bike with insufficient recovery between rides plus perhaps a steeper hire bike angle between saddle and bars than I am used to, putting more force on the wrist. Who knows, the rest day I so nearly took after the big ride might have prevented the injury! Still lesson learned and in some ways I'd rather be off the bike now than while in sunny majorca. The legs feel great of course, so I'll be taking up running again next week if the wrist doesn't get better!

At the risk of sounding like a smart ass, glad I took my own bike again. Guess that you don't realise there's a problem if its not significant enough to show up straight away.

Hope it heals soon and see you Sunday

Jason can probably lend you a part worn chain if you're desperate

That last line of yours has gone right over my head...unless you mean to hang myself with to counter non bike riding depression. In which case yes please Jason, if you could bring it to club night tonight that would be lovely!

The postman has dropped off two new chains from Merlin this morning, that's Merlin Cycles Rob  ;), nice new chain on the Trek and I can't shift the crud off my hands now.

I'll bring along the part worn chain this evening for whatever you may need it for... I'm happy for you to keep it  ;D

Plenty of new growth, whippy Hazell sticks in the hedges, an alternative?

10 out today, a cloudy start but promise of some sunshine en route.

Allan, Steven, Jason and myself were joined by Wayne, Richard, Terry, Neal, Jonathan and Haydn for our '3 peaks' ride. over the Bwlch, Rhigos and Aberdare mountains.

After a stuttering start we hit the bottom of the Bwlch and Steven showing the benefit of Mallorca miles, soon hit the front setting a good tempo, being chased by Allan.
Meanwhile I did my best to hang on to Terry's wheel who was also looking strong. In fact there was no more than a minute or two between the bulk of us, up this climb. After a rapid descent we regrouped at the turn for Treochy and headed for the Rhigos. Again Allan and Steven led the way followed by Terry with the rest of us trying to enjoying the sunshine as best we could! After the descent Allan made his own way back, while we regrouped again.
Headed  on, to Aberdare for coffee stop, This was a mixed blessing, great for coffee and cake but the legs weren't too happy to be warming up again with the climb out of Aberdare, a tough climb with its 16% section near the start but all made it over with various degrees of effort, Haydn looking the strongest by this time. Down into Maerdy we followed the old road through the Rhondda fach to Pontypridd and home via Llantrisant.

65 miles for me 4 hours 30. Not too shabby after all that climbing. Great ride and see you all next week

Enjoy Maerdy Wayne? Never seems quite as brutal as Penycoedcae to me though I'm sure it is in terms of gradient and altitude

Good riding from everyone today... Think I need to drop 10Kg to get over the hills.

That first section out of Aberdare is really tough Rob. It's quite an unpleasant surprise to come round the corner and see the steep climb in front of you! At least it doesn't go on for too long and the gradient drops off as soon as you go round the first corner.

Just to add my thanks to the real Pacers for their company and - at times - patience. I really enjoyed the ride; a good balance between demanding but still fun. Also my first time over Maerdy - the coffee and Welsh cakes complained/rumbled a bit but otherwise okay. A good & fast run down the valley towards home felt great after all the work to get us to the heights.
