New WASP 2018 following the same format as last year

Ok, some important Wasp race stuff at four weeks before the event. Firstly the basic stuff: Race is on 15th July and the HQ is at Cowbridge Scout Hall (CF71 7AP) - this is behind the cattle market, turn off the High Street just by the Market Place restaurant (the Duke of Wellington). There is a small car park on the corner there which we'll try to keep for official vehicles, and then a massive car park all around the market and in front of the HQ. The race start is 11.00 and I plan to have HQ open up at 09.30. The course is the traditional Wasp course around the Vale of Glamorgan, but finishing at Norm's cafe on Stalling Down. The race will do four complete laps and at the fourth time descending into Cowbridge take the Cardiff slip road to head up the bypass to the finish. 72.8m/117.2km. Fastest predicted finish 13.41, slowest 14.09.

Pre-race committee meeting to confirm everything on the 7th July tbc

The good news is that the new WCU system means that there are hardly any static marshals required and also that the road signage requirements are very well defined. It does though need a lot of signage, all the specifics on that are below. There are quite a few specific roles on the day that need filling, and my plan is to modify this message to keep track of filling those jobs.

Car drivers (need to be BC member, £20 fuel expenses each are budgeted, would prefer Lead 2 and Comm 2 at least to have some experience of road racing but you're all radio-linked to the commissares who'll tell you what to do anyway.)
1. Lead car driver (Lead 1):
2. Second lead (Lead 2):
3. Driver for commissare 1 (Comm 1):
4. Driver for commissare 2 (Comm 2):
5. Neutral service driver:
6. Neutral service spanner person:

Red flag static marshals only one needed at each point, make sure you've picked up a red flag and a hi-viz jacket/tabard.
1. B4270/A4222 descent into Cowbridge:
2. A4222/A48 slip road out of Cowbridge:
3. B4524/B4265 Ewenny garden centre corner:

Other staff which could be combined roles as long as you can transport yourself between different places.
Signing on/out steward 1: Chris G
Signing on/out steward 2:
Finish judge 1:
Finish judge 2:
Making tea:
Selling cake/sandwiches:
Contributions to cakes/sandwiches etc obviously please, it's a cycle race.

Managing the course is always the biggest task. I will go to the Velodrome and get as much signage as we need on Wednesday 11th July and aim to put out as much of it as possible that Friday. Anyone available to either help on Friday or finish up on Saturday please.

Note that our HQ is not at Cowbridge Comp, so obviously we don't need signs on Aberthin Rd for the start. We'll want them on the High St to warn that riders will be turning out from The Butts.

Superb. Can you put them up to direct toward Cowbridge at the club 10 turn roundabout please.

Rob,

Didn't think I'd be around this Sunday - but now I am around and can help doing whatever (bear in mind no prior experience though).

Let me know.

Cheers, Terry

Richard Lewis do you want a lift to Cowbridge Sunday morning? I've sent you IM as I don't have phone number for you.

Thanks all, my seventh Wasp as lead organiser and a real labour of love after being involved in almost every one since 1993  :o That was certainly an eventful one, I can remember a vintage tractor convoy, horses, Sunday drivers dawdling down the hill into Cowbridge, no radio link to chief commissaire, a slow-motion crash at the finish line, and (obviously) flat tyres for both the race ambulance and neutral service wagon... Glyndŵr Griffiths (73degrees) won the sprint from best junior Sam Beckett (JIF) after loads of attacking racing.

Brilliant to see loads of people out watching the race, and a very visible way to show the club off! It’s amazing to come up that hill in Lead 1 and see the crowds on the bridge watching the finish 🏁 There’s some photos on the fbook page but I know there are more out there, someone waved a video of the finish in front of me at the hq but I was totally out of it by then I’m afraid!

Well done Rob and all who took part and helped out today. I enjoyed today being taxi driver for comm 2, you certainly feel part of the race and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Thanks Liz for today. Happy to help out if needed every again. Well done all.
