The Wasp Road Race
« on: December 19, 2016, 04:40:06 PM »
Hi all, very pleased to announce that the Wasp Road Race will be returning to the calendar - on the 16th July 2017.

Some background info because I realise this may not mean much to many people: the Wasp was the Ogmore's contribution to the Welsh road race scene from 1985 up until 2011, taking its name from our yellow and black colours plus the traditional 'sting in the tail' uphill finish. For most of its life Mr Tim Raine was in charge and ran the event around the Vale of Glamorgan course (Cowbridge - Ewenni - Llantwit - Cowbridge); when I took the reins in 2007 we moved things around through a combination of necessity and cruelty, culminating in the last finish in 2011 being at the top of the Bwlch above Ogmore Vale.

But already by then, both I and road racing itself were in bad health. I was waiting for radiotherapy and the sport was at a moment of crisis as it tried to adapt to dangerous road conditions and the higher expectations of safety that we all rightly have nowadays; there was no option but for the Wasp to take a break.

Now, thanks largely to the always excellent work of Chris Landon (BBC Wales Sports Volunteer of the Year 2016... #BigThankYou #BehindEveryRace etc) we have a really good safety framework in place and I'm really excited to bring the Wasp Race back to life, and with it mark an important step in my own returning to normal life  :)

One of the major changes that has been made is that the safety requirements for events are now much more prescriptive with all courses being pre-approved. So our course is almost the same as the original - we go from Cowbridge school (Aberthin Rd), through Cowbridge (A4222) and start the lap by climbing the slip road onto the A48. Bear left onto B4524 at the bottom of Crack Hill, through Ewenni, then RIGHT before the new(ish) traffic lights to go around the Ogmore-by-Sea coast road, Southerdown, St Brides,  then right again towards Llantwit (B4265). Club 10 course through Wick, then left at the roundabout to go back up to Cowbridge via right turn at Nash Manor. Three full laps of that, then final time join the A48 going towards Cardiff instead, and finish up at Stalling Down by the garage. Which makes 107km, or 66miles in £sd.  map here Regional A event, 2/3/4/J/W. Start 11.00, finish estimated ~13.45. Always good weather, always good racing, that sort of thing.

Much more to follow nearer the time, but I have a very detailed risk assessment that includes diagrams of how every corner needs to be signed, which should in theory make it all very straightforward. I will need 6no static marshals to wave safety flags and put some signs up (three teams of two), 5no drivers (who need to be members of British Cycling) and someone confident with spanners to do neutral service.

Rob,

Excellent post which gives the back story for those who are not aware. The committee have agreed that the club members will support this event, in the same way as the Carl Roach.  It would be great to have some Oggies on the start line too - just make sure you nominate someone to help with the race in your absence! More to follow on this subject, thanks to Rob for all the work he has done on the subject so far.

Also, watch out for him in races this year ( Roberto Paolini on Strava!)

Sounds great, happy to volunteer on the day and with any help in advance.

Nothing in my calendar, so can probably drive and provide vehicle on the day, if needed.

I'd be happy to join in and help out. Happy with spanners (apart from wheel truing) or can Marshall.

Pencil me in for flag-waving duties (not being fully accredited with car or spanner, in a cycling context)

Rob this is brilliant news

Well done. I certainly know how much is involved to even get to this stage. I am both pleased and impressed that you are willing to endure the stress on the day itself.

It is great to see the amount of support you have already generated from club members. We have a great crowd and I am sure this will only increase as time passes. You have only to look at the enthusiasm for Majorca !

I will make sure I am available for the day and am happy to act in any capacity

Note that we still have the car top signs and the radio equipment in the lockup. You may want to have a look at this kit sometime to consider what new/other kit you will want. I think our direction signs are looking a bit sad and coloured flags may not be complete.

Well done

I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas. Best regards to them

Thanks for sorting this out Rob, I think it's great that the club is putting on events like this again.

Thanks Tim, I love it as you know! Proud to be the current custodian of a Welsh cycling institution.

And thanks everyone else for the enthusiasm, it's going to be awesome  8)

This is a very good point. One of the downsides of the new pre-approval system is not having the flexibility to tailor the course design to suit what the available resources. So I know already that we'll need 52no 'cycle event' signs and 22no direction arrows as well as the flags. Welsh Cycling have quite a lot in their lock up at the velodrome which is just as well because that's £820 worth of signage...

It's official: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/157271/The-Wasp-Road-Race

HQ may well have to change, but WCU have confirmed they have loads of signs and stuff to borrow so no problems on that front.

UPDATE: The New Wasp (copyright Tim Raine) will be moving back a week to Sunday 23rd July due to a Welsh Cycling request. That's the first weekend of the summer holidays in most places in Wales unfortunately. Course will change slightly to the Death Valley version rather than going through Southerndown to minimise risk of increased traffic going to the beaches that weekend.
