Back-up Trust Snowdon Charity Wheel Chair Race
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:23:04 AM »
On the 2nd of July I will be competing with 9 other lucky team mates in the Back-up Trust Snowdon charity wheel chair race. My long time partner in crime Rhys has hand picked 8 thick skinned athletes that he can hurl abuse at and safely navigate to the top of Snowdon and back down again.

This will be our 7th attempt at this race which we have previously won three times, this year we hope to go faster, endure more verbal abuse and break our current course record of 2 hours and 46 minutes. Here's a couple of videos of our previous attempts:

Rhys suffered a spinal cord injury after a mountain biking accident. Since then has continually volunteered for the charity teaching people with spinal cord injuries the wheel chair skills they need to live independent lives after their injuries.

P.S. Rhys was also into his road cycling too, Some of you may even know him as I believe he may have been a member of the club when he was in his late teens/early twenties.

Big Thank You to everyone who sponsored and showed us their support. We had a great team this year, and although we had not trained together that much it was obvious on the day that everyone had put the individual effort in. It was one of the few years that no one needed to rest on the way up, and everyone managed to jog/run the way down. Although we didn't break any records I believe we finished 5 minutes in front of second place even though we punctured on the way down.

This is a great event and the amount of support from the public on the mountain was superb. This year we shared the mountain with the seven peaks race, I don't think one runner passed us without offering words of support. On the way down a Sikh charity was getting underway and lined both sides of the path and cheered us on and offered water bottles too.

Ben Nevis is on the cards for September, which will be a tougher challenge and one we will do on our own as the charity can't put an event on there as it's a risk assessment nightmare. Whats App group already set up and 8 weeks training starting tomorrow once my legs are a bit less stingy!
