RR1
« on: February 03, 2016, 09:35:40 PM »
First 'reliability ride' is this Sunday 7th February, course details and rules can be found in the 'On Your Bike' section of website.

Two options for RR1 are:-

50 miles in 3 1/2 hours (14.2mph) start at 8:30 (sign on by 8:15)

50 miles in 3 hours (16.6mph) start at 9:00 (sign on by 8:45)

Please note the route DOES NOT go down New Inn Rd to the 'dipping bridge', stay on main road to Ewenny roundabout. Also at the Llantwit Major roundabout, riders have to proceed on to the mini roundabout at Heol Pentre Cwrt on BOTH laps.

See you Sunday and hope the weather improves!

Why don't we have a faster option? e.g. 19 / 19.5 / 20 or 20 / 20.5 /21 for example across the three reliability rides. I think we did this 4/5 years ago? Everyone would have something to aim for then, and have a chance of winning the trophy.

I rode part of the RR1 course this morning. The steep downhill section beyond Post Office Hill was subject to hedge cutting on both sides-the cuttings were so thick you could barely see the lane! It runs from the top of the hill round the bend to the bridge at the bottom-about half a mile(all of which I carried my bike this morning!!).
It will hopefully be ok by Sunday morning but thought I'd post a warning to look out at that point!

I will be there for this.
Any chance of a gpx file or loading a route so I can take a look before Sunday.
Cheers
John

I've found the Garmin course, can you upload from this?

https://connect.garmin.com/course/8667241

Unfortunately, it doesn't like the roundabouts at Llantwit Major, wants to go around them the wrong way! But you should get the gist of it.

When I introduced the faster group Chris, against resistance from some committee members, very few signed on to it on the days. This made it harder and less accessible than it should have been. Ironically however many who started with the large 17mph group went way too fast, did not qualify, but would have had they signed on to the 20mph group!! Make of that what you will....lack of ambition, lack of self-belief, preference for disqualification, general awkwardness etc.

If you look at your club ride speeds the 20mph is a no brainer. In theory it encourages order and teamwork amongst faster riders in the club, whilst still presenting a challenge. That seems well within the principles of a reliability ride to me. Enjoy anyway, RR1 has the best memories for me, with the weather often playing a big factor!

Had a quick chat at club night and consensus was, it's a bit late in the day to add in the third option. Worried that not enough would sign up for it.

Rob, not for the first time, pretty much agree with everything you said. I think there would be more glory in failing to qualify at the fast speed rather than outriding the slower time!

Thankfully I have a bit of a stinker of a cold so won't have it on my conscience if I don't brave the elements tomorrow. Hopefully won't feel better in the morning!
