Amblers Club Run - Sunday 31 January
« on: January 30, 2016, 11:03:12 AM »
As discussed last week the plan for tomorrow is to ride the revised Reliability Ride 1 route as a practice run for the actual event. My intention is to ride steadily with the aim to complete the course in 3 hours. This should be a comfortable pace for the current crop of Amblers. We'll have a coffee stop at Hannah's Diner before selecting the last leg home. The route has been uploaded by Andy on the website, but just to give you a quick overview it's as follows:

Brackla - Bridgend - Laleston - Ewenny - Post Office Hill - Wick - Llantwit Major - Cowbridge - Ystrad Owen - Pontyclun - A473 Llanharan - Bryncae - Pencoed - Coychurch - Ewenny - Post Office Hill then repeat to Cowbridge. On the second lap climb Primrose Hill to Hannah's Diner.

The forecast is pretty drab tomorrow, starting grey and damp with a mild Southerly wind which will freshen to a strong Westerly by 1200 and heavier rain following. All good character building stuff! Don't forget tomorrow is the last Winter start time of 0930!! See you tomorrow.

A tough but surprisingly enjoyable ride today. No doubt due to the grim weather forecast and Australian Open Tennis final the turnout was less than usual. It wasn't really an 'Amble' today but a mixed Pacers/Amblers rehearsal for next week's Reliability Ride. The target was to complete the lumpy 50 mile route in 3 hours, (plus or minus 10 minutes), which we achieved. Although the rain held off today it was very murky, and the wind ranged from brisk during the first hour to a tree bending 45mph by the end of the ride. Luckily we had Paul Nicholas with us and he was happy (and strong enough) to sit on the front for mile after mile, a bit like a slimmed down Ian Stannard.

By the time we reached the official finish at Hannah's Diner we had covered the distance in around 2 hours 54 at an average speed of approximately 17.4 mph. That included a couple of short stops and the usual traffic lights. By easing up on the throttle slightly I think most of the Amblers group can achieve 3 hours next weekend. Out today were:

Steven
Andy H
Terry
Tony
Paul - Guest rider
Nick Langley - Newbie - rode very strongly for one lap
Paul Nicholas
Mark P

Massive thanks to everyone today, think each one of you took a go at helping drag me back at some point! Safe to say I think I'll go for the 3.5 hours next week. Well done to you all for hitting the time

The Amblers left me for dead on Primrose Hill !  Very able to complete the course inside 3 hrs...

PS Paul Nicholas is flying - we need to get him some races to ride..
