13.09.15 Welsh Hill Climb Championship

Start sheet

https://create-cdn.net/sitefiles/13/3/1/133127/WCA_HC__Start_150913.pdf

Although no OVW entries, I like the Organisers sense of humour on the start sheet

Object of the day.
Start at bottom of big hill, ride to top of big hill, collapse in a heap, roll back down hill,
eat cake declare that training will start tomorrow, so more cake is allowed!

Davey - 3 (or possibly even 4) years ago Dan didn't quite catch me for 2 minutes on the same Black Mtn climb in Welsh Champs HC. This year he starts 2 mins behind me again...and now as National HC Champ (and Welsh HC Champ for as long as I can remember). Can you guess what my humble target might be?

Thanks Ron, however looking at forecast I might settle for the last two lines of the organisers "object of the day"...

It's O.K. to joke about this hill, but it is hard and long!  Good luck Rob, I'll see you at the Start as this year i'm start timekeeper instead of Finish.   The ckes are usually very good at the H.Q.!

Result - Winner Dan Evans,          Team Elite          12 mins.42.6secs.(His 5th.Title win).
2nd.  Ed Laverack,        JLT Condor         13mins.01.9secs.
                3rd.   Ioan Smallwood, Cardiff Ajax C.C.  13mins.33.2secs.
                12th. Rob Jones,          Cardiff Ajax C.C.  15mins.19.1secs.

There were 31 entrants of which 28 started and finished.  It was a balmy 17 degrees at the start and quite pleasant.  The climb was hard for the first section up to the cattle grid, then from the first hairpin a good tailwind up to the second hairpin (good crowd of supporters here).   But from this bend it was a cold headwind to the finish (only 10 degrees here!).
N.B. Dan's average speed for the climb was 18.03 m.p.h.!  and this was not a record.

Good to see you Sunday Norman - Dan's average was 16mph not 18mph. Still outrageous for 3.4 miles at >6% gradient. Mine was just 13.4mph!

Good luck for him in the Nationals next month (Dan not Norman). Not only is he a top rider but also a really genuine bloke, happy to talk at the summit about his power output, training and competition for the National HC.

Davey- said his watts were something like 447 for the climb, that he had improved so much last few years due to getting a coach and consequently losing over 5kg (now 65kg) and that Matt Clinton and another were his main competition for nationals but that he's confident.

Whereas in my opinion he used to beat us welshies through brute strength and determination, which wasn't quite enough for nationals, now he climbs with a lot of style too and looks lean without being skinny. Hence he is a very good racer and time trialist too.
