Beginner's Audax - Making Hay 200km March 29th
« on: February 06, 2025, 08:51:41 PM »
Planning to make this my intro to this year's Audax calendar. It's a couple of weeks earlier in the year, than the last time I rode it so hopefully the weather will be OK

It's a great route via Usk, Monmouth and Hay only spoiled by having to climb Torpantau with a 100 miles in the legs!!  :'(

If anybody is interested and wants any information please ask

Hi Andy. I’ve been having dark thoughts about doing an Audax since Rob spoke about it at the AGM. I’ve laid down in a quiet room when these thoughts occur until they go away, but they persist. He said that the club get points when members do an event. Do I need to become a member for that to happen or does that apply as a guest entry as well?

Sorry, Scott I'm not sure of the answer to that. My guess is that you wouldn't get points if entered as a guest.
It's not too expensive to join and you do get a quarterly magazine, which is full of stories of all sorts of people doing 'Dave Waltersesq' type rides!
It's actually quite an interesting read

My dark thoughts will never be so intrusive as to do any 'Dave Waltersesq' type rides!

Id like to get some club points so if I do that ride I will join Audax

Andy is correct based on our experience. People from the club have ridden and noted on their card the club but we didn't get any points. I think you need an Audax UK membership ID for it to get counted. I always forget to write mine on my card but the points (very few of them) do get put against the club in the all important race to stuff Doncaster.

Would also echo what Andy says about the Making Hay ride being a really good route, *especially* the 20% climb after 100 miles :-) It's loads of nice roads we generally wouldn't ride because it's a bit too far from Bridgend, but the start and finish in Cardiff brings them into scope.

There's only climb! And you're the 3rd fastest OVW rider up there.

34 riders (1 Oggie) departed Gabalfa on what looked like the start of a lovely day. It was sunny but cool and I decided to add a few kms by cycling over from Penarth. As I was to discover later, it was a good job that I was well wrapped up for the cycle over. Whilst the sun was out for the first couple of hours it soon disappeared and the drop in temperature was noticeable in the windy conditions.
Set off with the front of the field at a very reasonable pace. Early part of the course following lanes to Newport, stopping to pick up the 3 early information points. Navigated through Newport for the 2 control points on the way to Hay On Wye. Fantastic route, lanes to Usk, Longtown and more lanes of 'The Golden Valley', plenty of climbing and thrilling descent into Hay On Wye. Very glad it was dry as the descent was actually quite sketchy.
Leg back from Hay became a real drag into the cold headwind, glad to see the turnoff for Talybont though not looking forward to the few miles after the cafe stop.
Torpantau is 1.9km at average 11% (climbfinder has 3.3km at 7.2%, either way its hard. It's a tough climb and with best part of a 100 miles in the unfit legs, not something to look forward to. I'd spent the previous couple of hours riding and thinking about the various options to avoid it ( Taff Trail, back via Brecon, walking) but in the end settled for the "shut up legs" option.
Made it up without walking but had to have a cardiac arrest  break at the cattle grid (200m from the top). Cattle grids can be interesting to go over and trying not to fall, at 2mph!!  ;D
Ride trends downhill from this point but this didn't stop me cramping up and coming to a complete standstill on a short push along Ponsticill reservoir. Hilarious looking at faces of drivers trying to pass in the narrow lanes, with me hanging over the bike legs splayed out trying to massage the cramping muscles.
Merthyr to Cardiff is a bit of a grind so glad to make it back to the outskirts of Cardiff and manage a little effort back to Gabalfa.
Good day in the saddle and really glad to get around considering current fitness.
Nutrition: 3 chocolate digestives, 1 Oreo soft cake, 1  Marmite sausage roll, 1 fish finger sandwich, 1 pack Clif energy bloks, 2 flat whites, 1 bara brith and 1 welsh cake. Food of champions
The next Audax from Cardiff are Sat 26th April. Dr Foster Springtime Saunter 200km and the Transporter 100km both start in Cardiff Gate.
The Dr Foster 200km route looks a good ride and I'll probably ride that.
Hope some others can make it

What's not to like after reading your first time experience - A bit of everything, including comedic antics.

Rumour has it that this Audax thing can be addictive.

Well done  ;)

I have to 'fess up', it's not my first. Just the first this year. Did a few in 22/23 season  :)

Next Audax starting in Cardiff are on Saturday 26th April.

Dr Foster Springtime Saunter 200km over Severn bridge, lanes to Gloucester and back via Monmouth

Transporter 100km  Caldicot Castle and Usk

I'll probably ride the 200km event, looks like a good route

Anybody else interested?
