Club 59
« on: September 28, 2015, 08:00:01 PM »
As we come to the end of the racing season, you may be reviewing your performances and wonder what it takes to go faster.  Alternatively, you may be new to it all and want to learn.

Today sees the launch of 'Club 59', a programme designed to get you under the hour for 25 miles next season! I feel reasonably qualified to offer advice, having done it 101 times and if you follow the programme you will achieve it.   I will work with you to design your winter routine and hopefully,(with some advice from Andy) set you up, check your power and diet too.

So let's have some names!   If you are a little shy, can I suggest;

Harpo, Dave W, Greg B, Terry A, Toestrap Steve, Lee Stoneham and Mark Pope.  If I've missed anybody, please post here too...

It would be a brave person who would volunteer via this thread, have a quiet word with me at club night or on a club run..

All too willing to help!

It's definitely achievable, I managed it once!

I will be posting regarding coaching sessions I'll be running on Saturdays over the Autumn and Winter. We can target some sessions towards practical aspects of TTs. Rider position, starts etc
They will be useful for riders of all ability, from beginners needing help with riding in a group, novices who can't 'hold a wheel' riding in a group and more experienced riders looking to race or time trial.

Keep an eye on the coaching thread.

A bit coincidental - I was planning to pester both you and Andy for some advice re getting a bit more structured with my training this winter. So, sounds like a good idea and certainly interested. Thanks.

I have to give some input on this topic.
We have one of the most prolific TT riders on our door step, ' John Pritchard National 25 - 50 champion and 25  comp record holder with a '48'. In his day there was no one stronger riding into head wind than Pritch. He has won more TTs than anyone I know. In 1975 we at PTW used to ride to Mumbles every Monday evening, John was home from the RAF I have never riden with anyone who could go that fast on the flat we were together from the Ford Factory it was like trying to come through off a motor bike. His advice would be invaluable for anyone wanting to break the hour. Oh I was in the winning team with Pritch as a school boy in 1970 with a 1-4-31.

Okay, I think the members who have shown an interest are Dave W, Harpo, Craig, Mark P, Terry and Keith B.  For no joining fee you will get extra advice and support from Andy and extra grief and threats from me!

There's 6 months until the next race so there's no great hurry to peak just yet.

October and November

Target 100 miles per week.  Ideally split as follows,
Tuesday - Winter chaingang with Chris G.
Thurs - Turbo with intervals ( Andy or I can advise on these).  Turbo time equates to 16 miles for each hour on the turbo.
Sat - 1-2 hr ride tempo ( level 2)
Sun - 3hr ride with some intervals ( ie when we go up hill!) but not a total burn up..

The objective is to build stamina and endurance whilst keeping some top end.  If this is not enough you can improve your core and flexibility by doing pilates or yoga or just some core work in front of the TV.

I'll miss a few Sundays now with holidays and post- op recovery but I'll keep an eye on the forum and Strava !
