Pacers 23 January
« on: January 18, 2022, 05:02:52 PM »
Good news everyone, I'm on route duty this week because Dave hasn't decided if he can stand slumming it with the titaniumless plebs yet. 75 miles. Pancake flat until Aberdare coffee. Then roll home across Maerdy, Penrhys, Bwlch and Croeserw. 09:30 start. Planned on Komoot so always the chance of an exciting excursion along a footpath.

With the thermometer hovering around zero just four hardy souls made it out this morning. Mark's insomnia forcing him out about two hours earlier. And Dave making some excuse about a particularly long Bath yesterday, it wasn't clear. The air was so frigid that even Angelo had been forced to channel his inner Captain Oates and don gloves and leg warmers.

We rolled out at a brisk pace towards Neath. Angelo trying his new 40" wheels. At least I assume they were because they were always about a foot infront of mine. Took the rolling road to Resolven for a change before a short stop to allow Nigel to safely stow his ununstickable glass lenses. The gentle elevation towards Rhigos gave us a welcome opportunity to shed a couple of calories with an eye on a cake stop in Aberdare, whereafter Paul picked up the pace eager for a flat-white.

Ever the kind and benevolent route planner I'd arranged to arrive at the 16% slopes of Maerdy Mountain within several seconds of ingesting the last bite of Rocky Road, thus avoiding the usual shivvery curse that plagues many a poorly-planned January club run. The group were all very grateful.

Having warmed up we virtually flew up Penryhs and the Bwlch before some of the weaker, feeble riders (potential Wenvoe Wheelers members) dropped back to Bridgend. Chilly, but a good day out. And everyone agreed the route planning was exemplary.

Another concise, articulate and entertaining ride report, always enjoyable reading, keep them coming.

Personally, weaker and feeble rider I may be, (certainly not Pacers material, and I only managed a 32 something in the Cardiff 100 Milers New Year's Day 10 the other week), but I'm not about to defect to the Wenvoe Wheelers just yet, don't think they're affiliated to CTT for one thing.

Racers we are, cheers.
