Amblers Club Run - Sunday 13 December
« on: December 10, 2015, 06:23:22 PM »
The forecast for this Sunday looks pretty reasonable, with relatively light winds and dry, cool but not too cold temps (about 9 degrees).  Therefore, I propose the following amble around the Valleys:

Brackla - Coity - Brynmenyn - Bettws - Shwt - Maesteg - the Bryn - Cwmafan - Duffryn - Cymer - Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre - Glyncorrwg - the railway track (tarmac) back down the valley to Cymer and then Afan Argoed - Cwmafan - Taibach - Margam - Hafodheulog - Tondu - Brynmenyn - Coity - Brackla

It's 54 miles and the plan is to have a coffee stop at around 27 miles at the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre. Many of you will know it but for those that don't it does great, cheap food and drinks plus they sell various gels and sports drinks at the Café. See you Sunday at 0930. :)

Hi Tom,

If you manage Sunday's run on your 15kg monster bike in the one big ring gear I'll buy your coffees every week between now and Majorca! :D

Sorry to be even more antisocial than usual and peel off at Pontrhydyfen but I thought I'd be home earlier by going over the Bwllch(and being part way up it seemed a pity not to carry on!).You were probably wise to stay low as it was much worse visibility than I expected on the top.I thought to myself-'I'm glad I've got a decent back light ' and stopped at the top to check it-guess what?!A bit fraught after that!
I stuck to my regime but you probably won't be surprised to hear that harder than Bettws,The Bryn,The Bwllch or Llangeinor was the little rise over Coity Common-if you can crawl on a bike I was crawling.Hope you had a good ride Amblers and got back safely.

A great turnout today considering the grey, damp conditions with 16 ( I think!) Starting from Brackla in a mixed Pacers/Amblers group. We rode at a steady pace as far as the Bryn, taking in Coity, Brynmenyn, Bettws and Shwt on the way. Once we had climbed the Bryn we split into two groups with the Pacers heading off to Cimla and the Neath Valley, while the 7 strong Amblers headed up the Afan Valley towards the cafe at the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre where we met up with some of the old and bold from Port Talbot Wheelers and Maesteg CC. After apple pie, custard and hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream ( a mid ride snack recommended by Team Sky), the finely tuned athletes that are the Amblers rolled back to Brackla via Cymer, Taibach, Margam, Tondu and Coity.

At this point I must give Tom Beech an honourable mention for rising to the challenge and climbing the Bryn on his 15 kg shopping bike in the big ring ( the coffees are on me from now until Majorca Tom)! Despite a few issues with Strava that suggested we must have completed today's ride on pogo sticks, we actually rode 54 miles at an average speed of around 15.5 mph. Next week a little shorter and a bit flatter! ;D

I particularly liked the car coming down the dual carriageway way the wrong way, and then doing a u turn that split the group. What an absolute k***!
oh and the largest portion of apple crumble and custard I have ever had.
