Dave's big weekend away
« on: February 25, 2022, 06:39:51 AM »
If you don't already follow Dave W on Strava, now is the time. He is riding a 200Km audax from Aylesbury on Saturday as part of his qualifying rides for Paris Brest Paris in 2023. That would be impressive enough but he is also riding to and from Aylesbury as well. That's some 440 miles in three days.

This will be followed up by another 200 mile ride next Saturday!

Go Dave!

back home now with my feet up

this weekend was my second Audax and this one counts as a qualifier for PBP -paris brest Paris. Due to the last 2 weekends of awful weather and being overworked it hasn't helped my training. I've still been commuting and wanted to see where my fitness was and thought it would be great idea to cycle up to Aylesbury and back along with the Audax over 3 days.

for those of you who don't know what audaxing is, it's taken me a bit of getting used to
there are all different events different distances. for the PBP you need to do BRM 200 300 400 and 600km to be able to qualify for PBP.
after joining audax UK you can enter any event you want. some are the cheap price of £5 and others go up to £50.

the event on sat was the chiltern grit 200km in Aylesbury organised by the Aylesbury cycling club. it cost £10 to enter.
this is the ride. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38627289
the event was well-organised start time 7.30am to 8.30am at the hall they provided tea coffee plenty of toast and nanas available.
you get a brevet card which is what you fill in along the way at the controls and these are 3 places to stop and get a receipt that is easy the others are at a set distance you have to answer the question for instance at 152km what is the farm's name.
the questions I'm finding hard to get my hard round having to pay attention. and riding in km is not for me. I picked up a good tip which is before the ride convert all the points back to miles.

the route was ok mostly rolling lanes crisis crossing the HS2 build which meant that the rounds in place were shocking. the type of riders are a mixture of ppl with 10K bikes, fixies, bikes with panniers on. all types enter. there was one cycling club of 7 from London who just smashed it as a team.
I was glad at the end to find out I had got the answers correct and the ride verified. if the answers are wrong then you won't qualify.
just commuting this week and resting up to do another on Saturday

total milage for the weekend 449.5miles ;D

300km from Cardiff https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38557811 6am start.

I think we know how to react when you next suggest "a great idea".
