Mid-Week rides wk of 9/10
« on: October 09, 2017, 12:45:52 PM »
I was pleased to see Ron taking charge lase week but in his usual subversive manner!
Forecast is a bit iffy for the morning-if it's dry I will be at B&Q at 9.45 tomorrow.
Hope to be out later in the week as well-anyone else planning to be out tomorrow-I will post if weather is too bad for me.
I've had a request for a mid-week ride to go over the Bwllch-will sort this for the next week or so

I was planning a couple of away days but as usual the weather doesn't look good especially for Wednesday so I hope to be at BQ tomorrow

A better turnout than I anticipated this morning.Mark,Chris,Ron and I left B&Q to be caught by Patrick in the first few hundred yards. Mal then caught up with us en route and finally Carrie met us at the Café-we also saw Roy but not cycling!
We are hoping to get another ride in this week, possibly Thursday-will post tomorrow.

Carrie(W),Chris and I will definitely be out tomorrow. To make it simple I've suggested we meet as usual at 9.45 at B&Q but wuill do a different route to Tuesday-possibly over the Bwllch?I know Ron and Mark can't make Thursday but hope to see a few others-forecast is comparatively benign!

Given the gloomy weather-not what was forecast-and that Nick&Carrie who'd requested a sortie over the Bwllch couldn't make it I thought we'd be settling for a Vale ride this morning, however I underestimated the mid-weekers enthusiasm for suffering.7 of us set out,Chris,Patrick,Roy,Mike,Carrie,Mal and myself. We had a stop start ride to the Bwllch via Llangeinor and Wyndham-the stops caused by frequent putting on and taking off of jackets.Chris set a comfy pace up the climb and everyone was happy till Malcolm spoilt it for everyone with repeated accelerations.
Sadly he got his come-uppance once we got to the first summit and carried on up to the Afan Valley. They were remarking the white lines and in an effort to be courteous and let a timber waggon through Mal touched a newly painted line and came off-fortunately we were only doing about 5MPH and hopefully no serious injury to Mal or his bike.Carrie then punctured but as per her last 2 or 3 punctures Chris was on hand to change it(assisted by Mike). We dropped down and climbed back up to Maesteg via Caerrau, and followed the valley down to the Shwtt turn where we climbed(yet again)before descending to Bryngarw for a well deserved cuppa.Excellent ride which I hope everyone else enjoyed as much as me!

I forgot to mention that we were very impressed that when Mal came off not only the car behind us stopped to see if he was ok but the lorry which had passed us parked further up the road and the driver ran back to see if we were ok and if he'd passed us too close. We reassured him that he was fine(he'd waited a good while to pass us)and it was just  bad luck that the white lines were so slippery. Not all drivers hate cyclists! :)

Good report Tom and apart from a few scratches on my hip I'm fine I actually enjoyed the ride as I hadn't been up there for a while but the last 100 metres of station road out of nantymoel is tough - but probably a better route than the clock tower - did you notice that Chris wasn't even breathing hard on those hills  !! I thought being a grampa may have slowed him down a bit
