General Discussion / Summer wheels

Looking for an upgraded wheelset for the summer.

Want to know if anyone has any experience with Campag Shamal and what their thoughts are. In particular has anyone used the 2-way fit (Clincher/Tubular) can't say I have any immediate plans for going tubular but is it worth the extra few quid and getting the 2-way fit so I have the option in the future?

Thanks all

For sale and wanted / Aero bars for sale
« on: July 07, 2014, 04:07:44 PM »
After something of an aimless season, I have concluded that I have no great aspirations in  the time trial discipline so with that in mind. I have for sale a set of Profile Design Jammer GT aero bars. These came very highly recommended and have not been used in anger by me. They were an ebay purchase but overall in very good nick.
Should be at Chaingang for the next few Tuesdays where the goods can be purchased for £45

PM if you are interested and I will bring them along

Mountain Bike / Dabbling in the dark side
« on: June 07, 2014, 09:00:16 PM »
I joined some mountain bikers today to ride the taff trail and take in one of the Bike Park Wales trails ... all in the name of charity. It should be noted I don't own a mountain bike of any description but I do have a hybrid of more MTB than road shapeness, so that was my stead for the day.

A couple of immediate thoughts.
1. MTB riders (or at least those that I was with) really don't ride up hills very well. I'm no mountain goat, but as soon as the gradient veered up I was comfortably riding away from the group without really putting an effort in.
2. Bike Park Wales is an out standing facility. Simple as that

We rode up the fire roads to the top of BPW and as there was mixed abilities in the group we took blue routes (beginner) down. I survived on my hybrid, but its easy to see why full sussers are the de rigeur for the downhillers. I would recommend it as a day out, if nothing else the downhills are sure to improve your bike handling skills. It takes a fair bit of bottle but the minute you get scared then you are sure to find yourself in trouble, so I took the approach of a sembelance of control at all times.

That said, I am not going to be a convert anytime soon, give me the BWlch, Rhigos, Maerdy any day, I will give the faithful hybrid a few more spins out, now that I have dusted cobwebs off.

Sportives / Carten 100
« on: May 07, 2014, 08:59:03 PM »
I have my first century since 2009 planned for this Saturday in the Carten 100.
If the weather sorts itself out, I might go for a proper epic and ride home as well (I figure there are plenty of train stations to bail out on the way home).

If any of you Oggies are feeling generous, bung a few quid on Justgiving http://www.justgiving.com/Shawn-Murtough
All money goes to Marie Curie Cancer.

Thanks

Road Races / Crit Virgin
« on: April 18, 2014, 07:19:04 PM »
Well folks, today was my first experience of a Criterium. I've been keeping my entry quiet for the fear of abject humiliation but I was happy enough with how it went.

For all those virgins out there here is a summary:
I was entered into the 4th Cats at Castle Combe, 13 laps, 25 miles.
Special thanks to xray specs for his insider knowledge of the circuit and tips and advice.

My preparation was ok, not everything I wanted but near enough. Work/travel commitments meant I have missed a couple of recent chain gangs which I think would have helped...and getting dropped from the racers CG after 1.5 laps, this Tuesday just gone, did not exactly fill me with pre race confidence, but in hindsight may have been a blessing. Wednesday and Thursday I did what all the manuals say and that is taper! Wednesday was a gentle 3 mile run and Thursday 6 miles on the bike but couldn't resist chasing a KOM on Strava back in Swindon.

Despite visiting family I managed a reasonably rested night but was woken from my slumber sooner than I would have liked. The morning was all about keeping topped up on fuel and trying to do as little as possible (so a trip to the park with kids was not exactly high on the list of priorities, but some things in life are more important than the bike  :o ).
Breakfast was straight out of the Graeme Obree mould: jam on toast, a couple of mid morning bananas and a CNP flapjack saw me through to the 12:30 start.
Arriving at Castle Combe I didn't expect to be confronted by so many bikes/turbos/rollers but it was a full race programme so shouldn't really have been surprised.
Signed on and got myself a day licence (£5 with BC Silver).
Had a very gentle warm up and then had a look at the Youths race and then a few laps around the pits.
As the 4th Cats lined up in the pit lane to ready ourselves for the line we witnessed a big crash in the youths sprint which put the fear into a few fellow first timers.
The race itself....it was big field probably 130+ riders but the circuit is wide so  didn't seem too cramped.
As the race kicked off it was straight up to full pace, no gentle intro. I managed to find myself on the edge of the peloton in the full force of the wind in the first lap. Mental note to self to reposition for next lap.
The experience was exhilarating and daunting in equal measure, think chain gang but with a very fluid group and people moving up and back either side of you. Plenty of shouting in the group "hold your line" and "easy on the brakes", I don't think any of it was aimed at me. I did have contact with another rider at one point which he kindly thanked me for!
The first lap was brutal as I had expected it to be. I am reliably informed that riders were shedding off the back from lap one. The pace remained high throughout. The one bit of xrays advise I could not follow was to keep in the first 10-20 riders. From the start I was in the back half of the main pack and despite my best efforts found it really hard to move up. And equally getting the wrong line into a few corners cost me some places which were difficult to get back. I did my best to pick a wheel and try and follow it.
After 9 laps I lost contact with the main pack much to my annoyance. A 3 man gruppetto formed and myself and a Bristol rider did most of the work to get the three of us home and I even managed to win the mini sprint.
The Strava verdict is here:
 http://www.strava.com/activities/131488035/overview

Definitely by far the most fun I have had on a bike, beats time trialling and the track by a street. Castle Combe was a great circuit. Although there was also a crash in the Cat 4 sprint, I think it is more to down to inexperience than the track being dangerous.

Tired but happy tonight, Chinese and a few beers as a reward.

Coaching & Training / Sore core
« on: February 08, 2014, 07:32:37 PM »
Being a predominately lazy cyclist  :) i thought this year was the time to at least be a little more serious in my leisurely puruit...so for the last week or so I have being doing what I considered to be a relativley light core exercise programme. Lo and behold out on the road today as soon as I started pushing on a climb my abs were screaming, is this normal or have I over cooked my core programme?

General Discussion / AAAAAAAAAAAAaggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
« on: January 04, 2014, 12:00:51 AM »
I have just spent most of my friday night trying to fit fecking Continental Gatorskin to Fulcrum 7 wheels.

I've google it, watched the videos on you tube and I can't get the barsteward on the back wheel. Front one went on reasonable (30 mins ish), but the back is proving to be an absolute pig.

If anyone has some good advice on this matter please share it before I ................

I hope they prove to be as puncture resistant as they claim to be because I honestly could not foresee changing one at the side of the road

Time Trials / Swindon RC double hill climb
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:44:10 PM »
So this was suppossed to be the culmination of my season, stronger, fitter and faster than last year and first chance to try myself out on a hill climb where the playing field would be evened out with no real benefits from aero bikes.

Well that was the idea but as they say best laid plans.......
My preparation was shocking 2 weeks away from work (6 fligths, 8 hour time zone change, american food and a a dose of GI tract infection), meant that I turned up severely undercooked and quite frankly shagged before I started.

The first hill was a 3.2 mile drag quite similar to Brynna Hill and the kind of gradient that you could effectively treat as a short time trial.
I'd already decided to make sure I took a steady as she goes approach, no pointing blowing up in the first half mile and then struggling, trouble was every time I did try and put the power down there was simply nothing there.
I was stone cold last and severely disappointed.

The second hill was much shorter. A false flat to begin with and then a beast of a rise 17% gradient. I struggled up but by this point I was just happy to finish. For the record (2nd last on this hill).

Massively, massively disappointed and sorry to report a lantern rouge result for the club colours.  >:(
It was a strong field and by no means would I have expected to challenge for honours, but with better (any!) preparation I would have hoped to be somewhere in the mid-field.

I would highly recommend the event, well organised and a different challenge, and I am sure that the likes of Rob and Chris would be in with a good shout of challenging.

Thats me done competively this season. A long winter of discontent beckons.
