Good ride today and for all those who want to do a little strength training, then the tandem is a good way of doing it. We done Devils Elbow today, okay may not be the quickest of rides but we got up there, so well done to Keith. I can think of a few riders who would of climbed off the bike rather than suffer like he did. So who's next to try and beat my time or take on another mountain??????????

Club Runs / First ride for new tandem
« on: March 18, 2015, 07:06:38 PM »
Keith has now taken delivery of his new tandem, and after Andy gave it its maiden ride last night, today we gave it a full road test. It's fitted with 11 speed Di2 dual controls (pilot and stocker), though for me I leave Keith do 99% of the gear shifting as it gives me something to talk about :D. Its like driving an automatic car :D
The bike rides really well and if anyone is looking for a few strava sections on flat roads then this is the machine to do it on. I predict it will do really well on the club TT this year. It climbs well, not sure what cassette is on the back but the front chainrings are 52-36.
Anyway you can see the ride we done below all done at a comfortable pass and never really pushing hard, all made for a very enjoyable day out.

Keith is starting to build up for the Paris-Swansea ride with Andy and so a reminder that he always welcomes new pilots. Good steady ride today, not always the best of weather but still enjoyable

Time Trials / Tandem upgrades
« on: June 22, 2014, 10:23:54 PM »
Keith has upgraded his tandem with a new chain set, rear block, racing wheels, and new brakes!

Have to say it's made a huge difference. The bike really pops along now. I think it goes as fast or even faster along a flat road than a single bike. Top speed down the Bwlch yesterday was recorded at 41.3 mph. Without any great effort, just rolling along!

Because I'm away on holidays the next couple of weeks it would be good if someone would ride the club tt with him as I'm sure a good time is possible, or of course you could just go for a ride?

Club Runs / Sport should be for everyone
« on: April 03, 2014, 10:43:12 AM »
Over the years I've been lucky enough to play different sports around the world, and have had the pleasure of meeting some really nice people, whether they be world class athletes or hard working club members. One such person is Keith Barrett. The guy just loves riding a bike and to me is what sport is all about. Yesterday we spent a couple of hours around the Vale on one of those rides where we either seemed to be going up hill or into a headwind. His work rate is spot on and will give anyone in the club a good ride.
So all those members who've just come back from Majorca feeling good, or all those who go to chaingang, perhaps you could spend a couple of hours with him on the tandem and help a fellow club member enjoy sport? I promise you'll get just as much enjoyment out of the ride as any other ride.

Perhaps we could organise a club ride after all?

I'd always be up for MTB but don't think there will ever be enough interest?
Over the next couple of months I'll ride with the Garmin and posts the routes. That way if people want to use the routes they can. (Providing they can copy the route somehow)?
By the way last weeks route was technical in places and perhaps not suitable for everyone.

These sessions are a great idea, which may take a while to get it right. I believe that the pace is right, however what is happening is that because the group was still too big for the pace we were going, riders are staying on the front for too long.
If chains were no bigger than 4-5 riders, restrict the speed to an agreed pace, make sure there is 1 strong rider in each group to marshal. This would result in everyone doing more work yet maintaining a safe speed?
Just a thought? (Can't make it next week due to shift work)

Mountain Bike / The alternative club ride

Conditions were soft on the fire roads, rough and slippery on the single track stuff. Good ride but glad to get home. It is'nt often I take the garmin on the MTB but here's a nice route if anyone fancies a day on the dark side. After all, it doesn't matter what bike you ride, mtb, tandem or road, it's still miles in the bank and as I keep saying, they can all compliment each other.

Resisting the fitting of mudguards for a week or two in the hope that we might just have a little more dry weather? If conditions dry up then I hope to be there?

Thanks for the welcome with the tandem today. Our plan, or concern was that we would drop off the back when it came to the hilly bits so we thought we would get in front and then drop back as riders passed us on the climb.
Certainly looked as if there was a lot of riders riding well within their comfort zone.
Great to see so many riders out though and as far as I'm concerned whether it be a mountain bike, tandem or road bike, it's all about getting out.
Why not give Keith a call for a ride?

General Discussion / Merino wool base layer at Aldi

If anyone is thinking of base layers for the winter, Aldi have merino base layer clothing on sale from this Thursday 26/9/13. They were of good quality last year.

That hill destroyed me and I've never been so close to getting off the bike before as I did today.

Well done to you guy's and I'm sorry I couldn't live with you today. After we split I passed a few runners who seemed to be suffering far more than me, which then reminded me of 'RULE 5' so I ended up doing the route attached, even if it was a bit slower than normal.

General Discussion / Re: Mudguards & lights
« on: September 21, 2013, 10:36:04 AM »
I've had a set of Hope 2 Enduro for 4 years.Last week they stopped working and I suspected the battery leads. Contacted Hope asking for a price on repair and then sent my complete light set back for them to service.
Lights were returned this week with 2 new batteries fitted with a modified cable under warranty!

Mudguards depend a lot on the bike frame they are to. I've tried the SKS and have cracked 2 sets. I think they may have been secured too rigid on my frame? I now have a set of Cycraguard from Ribble cycles. They seem to be made of a more flexible plastic and have more clearance around the tyre. Disadvantage of them is that they come in more pieces to put together which can result in them becoming loose after a bumpy ride. Solved this problem with a bit of super glue and. Small self tap screw.
