Title: Carl Roach Memorial 25 Mile TT - 28th September 2013. Our Event
Post by: traine on September 19, 2013, 11:22:59 AM
All

I am the organiser of this event which was postponed from 28th April this year to the 28th September.

It has attracted a field of 110 riders 50% of whom are from outside Wales because the course based upon a Rhigos Start is the fastest in the UK. The Competition Record for 25 miles was set upon it last year by Dr Michael Hutchinson (Dr Hutch) in 45 minutes 46 seconds. Not even Chris Boardman has gone that fast ! Dr Hutch has told me he is 80 % certain to be riding on the 28th at number 120!

We have several Oggies riding too. Steven Madeley, Club Chairman leads off the event and Richard Beech, Mark Rosser, Mark Knott and Rob Jones are also entered.

Club members have also volunteered for all the duties needed and these are;

Catering; Lindy Landeg (plus Steve and others at HQ). Cakes have been promised by Mary Marks and Mrs Shawn Murtough

Numbers at HQ; Chris G

Results Board at HQ; Steven Madeley with Keith Christie and Mark Pope

Pushers Off at the Start; Richard Roberts and Will John who will also assist the Start Timer Robin Field

Setting up and Marshalling the Lower Course; Ron Boast with Paul Longthorn, Wayne Evans, Jeff Hocking and Mrs Hocking.

Setting up and Marshalling the Upper Course Andy Harries with Andy W, Neil and Alan Clayton.

Norman James (Club President) is Finish Timer with Steve Landeg as number checker.

The family of Carl Roach hope to be present at HQ for the presentation of prizes at 6.30 pm

HQ is the Community Hall at Hirwaun which will be open from 1:00pm. The first rider is off at 3:10pm  From Rhigos.

The Start Sheet is being finalised today (last date for entries was Monday this week). This will be sent out with a posting on this site so all members may see it.

I am in club this Friday from 8.00pm and the same again next Friday. It would be appreciated if anyone who has not volunteered to help could come along and discuss how they may do so. If anyone who has volunteered and cannot now help please contact me urgently.

I am most grateful for the great cooperation I have received so far and look forward to this event, after a lot of work, which will assist the club coffers and be a brilliant way to get club members together with a cycling focus.

Whilst I'm a tester through and through, also dedicated to the cause, I'll have to pass on helping out this year.  I dont think that my bride would be happy if I was marshalling or reaching whilst she waits at the alter.  Also my daughter may be hacked off in the future if I missed her christening.

Needless to. Say I'm getting married on The 28th.

Hi Tim

Unfortunately I will be unable to provide a cake. We are in the middle of an extension and at the moment our kitchen consists of a microwave and camping stove. I did just google microwave cakes and though there are many recipes, I don't think I would be popular for suggesting or attempting to "bake" one of them.... washing up is also a bit of a nightmare at the moment.

Sorry to welch on my assigned task.

Shawn

Tom and Sian, thanks for reminding me you are away.

Mark - CONGRATULATIONS - I am pleased you took the opportunity to advertise your 'soon to be' status. Have a great day. I can tell you that the first 46 years are the worst !

Shawn. What a disaster. Living on tinned sardines I bet. Still, even if your wife (or are you the cook ?) cannot do a cake are you up for a bit of marshalling. Ron Boast needs a hand between 3.15 pm and 5.45pm at the turn at Aberdulais. You will need a Hi Vis jacket and to contact Ron if you can do it. Richard Roberts is butchering this next Saturday and cannot push off so Wayne is taking up that job !

Can anyone else donate a home baked cake ? Mary has promised one.

All ; I have now sent off the Start Sheets. Hopefully it is attached now. If not I will get it sent to all members.

Cheers. Tim

I will be putting up the race signs at the Aberdulais turn and the Resolven round about. When the signing is complete I will be marshaling at the Aberdulais junction. If you do wish to lend a hand please reply, you may also want a High Viz. High viz jackets are needed to work on this very busy road. I can give one person a lift from Bridgend area.

Chris and Paul

Many thanks. Please see Ron's note. I will want you both at Aberdulais with him please from 3.15 pm onward.

I will have jackets at club on Friday but Ron may bring some along if you ask him, to save you the journey.

Peter Jones of Port Talbot Wheelers has also volunteered for Aberdulais so we have a full team there now. Jeff Hocking has apologised (shift work) and I have not had confirmation yet from either Shawn or Jonathan so I will not count on them.

Andy Harries with Alan Clayton, Neil and Andy W are doing the upper course based on Hirwaun (Penyderyn) roundabout. Andy will be at HQ at 1.00pm.

Chris G and Keith Christie are, as far as I know so far, OK for HQ looking after signing on and the numbers and I have asked Mark Pope to help push off with Will John because the butcher is butchering (it is a Saturday !)

Our Oggie Banner flags are to be set up at HQ and at the Start, to help riders find it.

I am still looking for cake makers. Please let us know before Lindy buys her stuff tomorrow.

See you all on Saturday, or tomorrow night if you can make it.

Tim

Keith Christie is also working Saturday so I need a volunteer not yet on my list to deal with signing on and numbers at HQ. To be there at 1.00pm through to 6.30 (or 4.30 at a push) in the dry and warm. There must be dozens wanting to meet the riders ! Ring or text me on 07840 338754.

This is your club. Be part of it ! We have our club riders too to support. Family would be welcome.

Great. We have  very good club support for this event now after a very busy club night tonight with plenty of marshalls and helpers. Thank you all.

I think Lindy is managing with only one home baked cake. I shall have to learn to bake for the next Carl Roach 25 in April 2014 when Steve Landeg is organising this. Beware !

See you all tomorrow, the weather forecast seems OK with a tailwind out. I should be surprised if there is not a rash of PB's and, if Doctor Hutch makes the start, some pretty notable times.

Tim

Well done to Tim and everyone else involved in yesterday's event.  Lots of non- starters ( including myself) but those who rode did good times and many personal bests ( including Kieron Davies who got within a minute of Hutch)  Gary Dighton also rode so we had two Competition record holders in the room...

Just echoing Steven's post on this being a successful team effort co-ordinated by Tim.

My first contact with Carl was on my first club run with the club and I recognised that, besides being a superb cyclist, he was equally qualified as a p1$$ taker. Those traffic lights that appeared on the course that had no purpose at all had a definite Carl flavour.

I had an interesting and educational couple of hours with Norman noting the finishing times. I really need to swat up on my numeracy skills; subtracting from 60 is not the same as subtracting from 100. Or was that Carl up to mischief again?

An enjoyable couple of hours at the "Col de Aberdulais". Paul passed his Phd in sign putting up and taking down, I will need more pupils for next year taking name now! Watching the riders exit the interchange we decided to observe who was the best rider through that junction. one lady rider said"thanks" twice to each marshal, much appreciated, but  lost points, others were putting on the taps too soon and going very wide. The award for best rider through that junction goes to Barry Williams, smooth as double cream and not any old double cream. Hitting the apexes perfectly and not panicking. Like a fine wine

At last I am almost free of the admin having taken a few days to get over the event itself, but now on track to put it to bed. The Result Sheet went out today. See attached.

This was truly an epic. I cannot recommend that any event be postponed because you just end up looking endlessly at entries, both cancelled and new and the correspondence attached to it takes forever. It's a good job I am retired, I would have given up months ago. At least I have my life back now.

Enjoy what is left of 2013 with my organisation of events. Next year I am on the bike and would like to explore other worlds. Step forward the next Social Secretary at the AGM ! I am only committing to the Celtic Series event on 10th June as an event organiser.

Having got that off my chest I can now get to the whole point of this posting.

 Applause ! ! ! !

OVW is the best club to be doing anything in ! The support I have had from club members for the Carl Roach has been peerless. I am not the only one who has spent lots of time and effort on it or the only one who has committed fully.

Congratulations to all who took part on the day and put on a great event but especially to Steven and Steve Landeg (the professor) who did endless drafts of schedules and picked up loads of errors, and assisted Norman and Lindy with the catering on the day. To Norman and Lynne for their advice and support. To Ron and Andy Harris and all those at HQ and on the road who marshalled. Finally to Alan and Mary, I am not yet finished with the accounting so I hope for Marys indulgence - again. Brilliant !

With a mention in Cycling Weekly, a bit of editorial not just results, we have brought credit to the club. Roll on next year when I hope that Steve Landeg has as much enthusiasm shown for this event as I have seen. It is in late April so we should be able to get a few Oggies to ride as well, even if it is in the Overflow Event.

Thank you folks

Tim
