On 27th April, OVW will be holding the 2014 Carl Roach Memorial time trial.
For those who don't know, Carl was one of the most talented riders in the area who was tragically taken form us way too soon.
For the club to promote this event it needs a core of volunteers to crew various roles on the day. Without these, the race will not happen.
One of the unofficial rules of clublife is that no OVW clubmember can get on the startsheet unless they are amongst those who can do a job on the day or supply someone who can.
So, I need some volunteers to put up/take down direction signs, marshall two junctions, push off riders, assist the finishing timekeeper, make and serve refreshments, and staff the HQ before during and after the race.
To date, I have two volunteers, one for sorting out the incoming finish times and one for catering.
I also have entries from more than two club members.
This event, depending on the numbers of entries, will need a minimum of 13 individuals to step forward. Ideally pick your job now and, especially, tell me what you are willing to do.
So before you intend this to be one of your season's targets, let me know of your availability.
-
Available, prefer HQ job but generally do as I'm told!
-
I will sign the Resolven and Aberdulais roundabouts and marshal at the turn, I will need an assistant to get the signs up quickly plus a few marshals. We now have 80 members in the club so we should have no problem in getting volunteers. Perhaps others can the ride without having to help out.
-
Steve you can put me down to help out i will do any role required.
-
Thanks for putting your hands up.
C'mon these chaps want some company.
-
Sorry Steve-I'm off back to Spain next Sunday and won't be back in time-I'm ok for Tim's event though!!
-
Hi Steve,
I`ve entered but fully understand that helpers/club comes first.
Happy to help in any role?
Kind Regards,
Mark.
-
I,ve entered too. I'll do the result board....
-
We could still do with more helpers, this would help Mark (he need lots of help) to concentrate on the event and not have to marshal after he has finished . We just need someone to stand at the turn and roundabouts to direct the riders. It's not to difficult and you get to wear a Hi viz jacket, can't get better than that. Just add you your name to this page and Steve will be able to sleep at night. Thanks
-
Hi Steve,
I can assist - put me down for whatever is required!?!
cheers
Jason S
-
I would like to ride but don't mind helping either as I don't think I'll threaten the leaderboard.
And directions are my strong point....
-
It looks like I should be available for this if needed, please let me know if you require me to take on a role for the event.
I've not attended this event before nor have I helped in such an event, so a sensible position would probably be best for me if you're short on volunteers.
-
I am available for selection, happy to help where needed!
-
What Jason said applies to me too - no critical roles please (but can do anything else) - I would like to ride if possible.
-
I'm available to help should you need me, what Jason said applies to me also.
-
Steve
Joe and I have entered but happy to help later on marshalling /HQ duties etc
Richard

Steve. Can you put me down for pusher off?
Not pushed off before so please have me 2nd so the previous pusher can give me a few tips immediately beforehand and watch me for the first few. I presume there is some kind of rotation on pushing off for that period of time.
You need a sub for me in that my wife is expecting baby on 1st May.
-
Steve. Can you put me down for pusher off?
You need a sub for me in that my wife is expecting baby on 1st May.
I bet she'll be pushing harder.
-
Thanks for the offers of assistance with this race.
There's about 140 entries to date, last orders will be Thursday.
On the various race staff roles, things are still subject to change but it looks like:
HQ: Alan M, meet 7 greet; Mary, Lindy: catering; Steven M incoming results & MC
Start timekeeper : Robin Field
Finish timekeeper : Norman, recorder: Andy H
Pushers: Jason S & Rob jones
Marshals at Hirwaun roundabout & signing upper end of the course
Me, Tim & RoyH
Marshals at Aberdulais roundabouts & signing lower course Ron B, Paul L, Wayne E, Neil B.
anybody else wanting to join the party certainly will not be turned away.
-
Richard the Butcher will also be turning up with a view to being a pusher ...
-
Richard the Butcher will also be turning up with a view to being a pusher ...
Excellent.
The start needs a marshal where the access road meets the main highway.
The extra person will enable this.
-
I'm available to help. I'm quite happy to do the pushing off as per last year.
-
Hi, as a new member I'd be happy to help if I can, not sure on format or what needs to be done or the protocols! Let me know times and where you need me to be and I'll be there.
Thanks
Richard( Coychurch)

We could still do with a few more helpers, cover for toilet breaks etc. This event takes up to 4 hours and bladder size is very important, needs must. Just come along and see what goes on at the UK's premier 25 mile TT. High Viz jackets, our club only has a limited amount, is anyone able to bring their own? Keep watching this site for further info on time and locations for all helpers. If there are any keen bakers out there, cakes can be sold at the finish to the competitors.
-
Just tried to enter but last orders seem to have been and gone so put me down for something, I'll do the first turn if you want.
-
Right then.
Entries are well and truly closed.
I'd guess there are approx 150 competitors.
I'll be tackling the start sheet today with a view of getting the paper notifications in the post tomorrow.
Thanks for the offers of assistance, I think we have enough bodies for a good degree of flexibility let alone company for those out on the course. It also gives us as a club a good presence and shows that we take our events seriously.
-
Steven can you Email me with details of our visit to the lock up, address on my profile. Good start number for Mark, didn't he buy you a drink at the dinner? I will work out what signs we need for the two roundabouts. How many Hi viz jackets do we need, anyone got their own, answers as quick as possible please.
-
I've got my own hi-viz.
If we need more for the event let me know & I'll be able to use the spares from work for the weekend
-
Does anyone know how many hi viz jackets are in the lock up?
-
Ron, meet you at the lockup at 11:00 on Friday.
Someone taking responsibility for signing the small industrial estate roundabout and directions to HQ would be appreciated.
-
Steve. I will see you at 11 on Friday at the lock up but I need to be away at 11.10. I will collect the HQ and other signs to do the small IE plus one jacket.
Great response from members. It seems most will get a ride if they have entered. We'll done.
Tim
-
Ron, I will bring a High Vis jacket!
-
Nice to se that Oggies will be able to ride our event, thanks to all volunteers for making this possible. Arrangement to meet up at the turn for the set out of signs to follow.
-
The excitement builds, there is a preview on the CTC site for those who can't sleep, some very good riders on the start list. For those not familiar with the seeding system of any TT, the top riders are seeded 10, 20,30 etc with the top rider off at 120. Other seeded riders go at 5, 15 etc. We have competing on Sundays TT, Michael Hutchinson, multi competition winner, the flying postman Matt Bottrill, Adam Toppham, BBAR winner, Adam is current champion at 50,100 and 12 hr combined, he averaged over 27 mph for the three combined distances, so should be under the hour. We also have Justin Cannon and Keiron Davies seeded high up. Check out the start list on the CTC site.
-
Start time at 9 31 so the first riders will arrive at Resolven roundabout at about 9 50. So could the Oggies setting out the bottom two roundabouts meet at Aberdulais roundabout at 8 30. This will give us plenty of time for the setting up, bring along a pliers or snips for cutting cable ties. A pair of water proof trousers would be handy to stop the expected strong sunlight penetrating, flask of tea snacks, and a camping seat. See you all tonight.
-
I will pick up all the hi viz jackets and trousers from the lock up and bring to club tonight, those who have their own please inform me on this site. Steve will have jackets and trousers at HQ on Sunday morning. Thanks.
-
Hi - had to drop out of the TT - I know X-Ray was wanting to ride - not sure if possible but if swap my ride for your volunteer duties if possible. Otherwise I am available to do anything needed.
-
Chris, if you come to the club tonight we will sort something out for you. Or just turn up at Rhigos HQ on Sunday morning, all help is needed, Oggies who are riding and doing other jobs after they finish will have less to do. We still more marshals if there is anyone out there doing nothing on Sunday morning, just help out at one of the turns, good view of the race too.
-
The roll call for Sunday is:
Steven M
Tim R
Ron B
Paul L
Wayne
Andy H
Jason S
Jason T
Neil B
Chris R
Roy H
Rob J
Mark P
Richard S
Can you guys confirm that you are still available?
-

Richard, Roy and any others newbies, if you turn up at the HQ from 8.30ish onwards and speak to Steve Landeg or any familiar Oggie faces they'll point you in the right direction.
HQ is at Rhigos Community Centre CF44 9HJ. Next to the Rhigos Rugby Club
-
Sorry Steve working .Sorry for the short notice.
-
I'll be there - anyone riding after?
-
I will be available tomorrow so I'll see everyone there.

Wayne has had to pull out, can I have a sub please for the turn.
-
Ok thanks, I'll be there for 8.30ish. One last question, what time will we finished? Estimate?
Ta.

Richard S.
Richard, there are so many variables. The roads where marshals are required do have a fair bit of traffic on them and, unless you bring a deckchair or similar, it’s standing for over three hours. Also, I think we can expect at least one shower of rain.
It depends on how old your daughter is and what’s her inertest in a sport that is fairly uninteresting from a spectators point of view.
Fresh air, sunlight and exercise were generally a toxic combination for my two daughters until they left school. I took my youngest to watch a race and had a “can we go now” after the first competitor had passed.
Last rider at the turn should be around 12:30.
-
Great thanks Steve, I'll leave the daughter in her bed! Earlier start than I thought. I'll see you there at 8.30ish. I'll bring along a small camping chair if needed and waterproofs. Happy to do whatever or go where you think best.
See you tomorrow.
-
Richard: I think Ron has volunteered you to staff the turn.
All others: a note in the CTT organisers guide;
............and ensure all marshals and officials are wearing a Hi Vis jackets to indicate their association with the event.
this will protect our backsides a bit.
-
Does it matter which colour (Yellow or Pink) the high visibility is?
-
Ok thanks I'm sure you'll brief me on what needs to happen at the turn!
-
I'm still available for tomorrow.
see you at HQ
-
I'll need a high vis then please, presuming any available will be at HQ
-
is Richard joining the A Team at the turn, does he have a high viz?
-
I haven't got a Hi Vis jacket. Though I have Hi Vis vests.
-
Subject to a shuffle on the day:
Start: Jason S, Rob J, Mark P pushing & marshal the service road junction
Hirwaun Roundabout: Tim, Chris Reed, Roy H
Aberdulais: Ron, Paul, Neil B, Richard S
Finish recording, spotting and phoning, Andy H, Me & Norman.
HQ: Steven M results co-ordination and MC.
Utility player: Jason T
Marshal Jackets & overtrousers will be at the HQ from 08:00.
That almost looks like a plan.
-
I just picked up three hi vis tabards (all size large) from Halfords for £1 each, so I'll bring those along in case there's a shortage and they can be kept for future events.
-
We will need one Hi Viz at the turn, I will be there at 8 30, if anyone is driving around the course before the riders, please drop one off, or give one to Steven to drop as he is riding around. Richard do you have a Hi viz? I will open this link in the morning before I leave. PS can one of the Turn Team print out a start sheet. Ta
-
Hi I lost a little black phone sized wallet at the event. Either dropped in Jason s car or left in a hi vis jacket. Please let me know if you stumble across it as valuable contents. Ta Rob
-
Many Congratulations for all involved today - another well coordinated event. The 'Curse of Carl' struck again when cones appeared on the course just before the start. The course had to be shortened to approx 22.5miles. Just to rub it in, they were removed again mid-event! Conditions were tough, but it did not stop Matt Bottrill posting an amazing time. Good ride too from Keiron, just over a minute behind.
Mark Nott also deserves a mention for beating me for the first ( and I suspect, not the last time!). Grasshopper, you can now walk the rice paper!
-
The spies at the turn did witness a rider trying to go down the old road, despite the fact there were two marshals with their arms outstretched and some arrows pointing the riders in the right direction, back up the dual carriage way. A "Red Shorts" moment? One point on behalf of the Honourable Association of Sign erectors, can we source longer cable ties, Ebay maybe and we seem to have more left hand arrow signs than right ? But at least the weather was fine, but the wind picked up quite a bit at 10.30. More Oggies will receive their C&G in sign putting up, dodging traffic and the use of snips. Thanks for the help gents.
-
Hi All.
Just wanted to take a moment to say "A Big Thank You" to all who helped out today, which allowed us riders to represent such a fantastic club !!!
Steven, "Big Ups" to you for coaching and mentoring me, much appreciated !!! "Still got loads to learn, Master"LOL
I over heard several riders saying what a well organised event,so thanks again to Steve Landeg and all the team.!!!!
Cheers,
Mark N.
-
Yeah poor Steve, felt for you today mate. Anyone brave enough to take on this cursed event deserves the top qualification in event organisation!
SWTRA are off my Xmas list - We really should let them know the situation they put us in today (possibly they were not even aware of the fleeting visit made by the tree fellers). Once the cones were down we could not have been in a more dangerous place for the start in my view. We'd have positioned ourselves well down the layby had we known. Some riders were understandably frustrated at the start but not towards Ogmore. At least they wouldn't of had a good time today anyway, given the conditions.
-
Great result today - this ranges from good organisation to ride times to Lynne's corn beef pie!
Well done Mr Landeg, you deserve a huge glass of red tonight.
(Rob - your phone case in question is not in my car)
-
Thanks Jason, its not a phone case as such. Its a black synthetic thing with a zip. Card is now cancelled but the cash in it would be useful! Its either in a hi vis jacket pocket (back in the bin bag) or I've drooped it in layby or car park. Clumsy fool! :(
-
Ladies and Gentlemen.
Yesterday, there were a few of you that I didn't say much to, didn't say anything and didn't even see you at all. Obviously the day didn't start too well with 2Km of cones sprouting up out of nowhere and I the inside of my head turning into mush but I think we made the better decision with the information we had at the time to shorten the race. If, and if, we had known that cone removal would have commenced before 10:00, postponing the start could have been the best except for creating a timekeeper's nightmare.
Apart from a few dissapointed competitors who didn't get to race the full distance, the various forum comments, emails and texts I have seen since close of play have been positive and asking me to pass on their thanks for providing them with some sport.
If there are any workable suggestions on how to improve on yesterday's efforts, let me know.
There's still a little admin to do which I am slowly progressing with today as well as search for Rob's piggy bank in the mountain of stuff still in the back of my car.
Does anyone know who has the race sign on sheets?
Oh, an here's a gentle reminder for the Ogmore competitor who is yet to provide a race fee. I have your entry form so I know where you live....and I'll tell Mary.
Thanks for contributing to the effort.

Sorry matey, it wasn't glass, it was a bottle.
-
I heard many positive comments and everyone I spoke to was just happy to ride and understood why the course needed to be shortened.
Don't worry i'll get a cheque in the post if someone PM's me an address to send it to.

Steve
You have received great comments and you we'll deserve them. We all appreciate the time and trouble you have taken and I add my congratulations for a star event. We need heroes in the club !

Tim now joins the elite list of heroes in the club, as he found my wallet/ purse (in a hi vis jacket). Well done Tim, I know where my vote for club person of the year is going! :)
