One for the diary! Sunday 29th June British mens and women's road race. I remember few years ago we had a great club ride to Abergavenny to watch, Be good if we can do the same again this year.
-
Sounds like a great day out Steve. I'd be up for this.
-
Also see the Tour of Britain gets to Abergavenny this year, with a stage finishing on the Tumble! Tues Sept 9th

-
Sounds like a couple of club outings to look forward to.
-
Steve, are you still planning to do this? Have you given any thought to where you'd watch the race?
-
Yeah definitely, as most people know my route planning isn't very good so may need some help. Be good if we could have a few more numbers, and someone who knows the area to put us in a good spot.
-
I wouldnt mind tagging along, subject to how my legs feel after the sportive the day before!!
-
I know the area, sure we can find a decent circular route over. Not sure of race details mind re best places to watch

This is the course map. One long circuit and then10 short circuits around Abergavenny. So probably best to get to Abergavenny itself.
-
The mens road race doesn't start until 1pm, if we are in Abergavenny for the finish then cycle back its going to be really late. How about watching it in Caerleon then coming back, any thoughts?
-
Long range weather isn't looking that great. I probably won't ride.

Premature; surely. Wonder what likelihood of a forecast 5 days on being correct is?...time will tell. There's always the tv if it rains!
-
Agreed - I won't rely on the weather forecast until the day before! However if there's a hint of rain, riding to Abergavenny, hanging around and riding back does not appeal!
-
That's TRUE. Remember. Black mtn too well!
-
Steve I'd be happy to watch it in Caerleon and then come straight back.
-
I would be happy with Caerleon if it means not hanging around for a late in the day finish, that being said I'll be keeping an eye on the forecast as I don't mind riding in the rain but I wouldn't want to hang around for any length of time.
-
Don't worry! I'll be the first to bail out if it's raining.
-
how about something like this? haven't done this before so i hope it works.

-
What time do we need to set off to get to Caerleon in good time to watch the race come through?
-
The forecast for now is just a risk of light rain showers.
-
I can't make this one Steve but your route looks a good one.Just thought I'd mention there's a newish cycle track(signposted)from Caerleon to Newport.Very scenic along the river and fine for road bikes, avoiding some pretty busy roads and junctions
-
Tom - Thanks, certainly an option to have a look at on the day and pick up some of the route.
Richard - I think the start time should be the same 9am this should give us time to get there maybe have a coffee and pick a good spot.
I remembered in work last night a club run Rob took us on a few years back when we went to Usk. Ive had another look and used some of the roads we went on so this route might be better.
-
Sorry that was the same one
This is the new one - http://www.strava.com/routes/523241

Its the TT over same neck of woods today btw. Between Celtic manor and Usk I think.
Hope to join you on Sunday btw. Looks like a plan is coming together, nice one steve
-
Yes thanks to Steve for all the organising, hope you can organise some tidy weather for us on the day too. :)
-
Count me in, weather forecast improving, looking forward to it :)
-
Every time i look the weather is getting better all the time. Hope you can make it Rob, haven't used my garmin 500 for following a route before so would be good to have you navigate through Newport.
-
I'm in guys!
-
I hadn't appreciated race doesn't start til 1...thought it finished bout then! So while I may enjoy some miles with the rest of you in the morning, I'll be heading home for my lunch time curfew.

Route looks good Steve.
What's the proposed start time for tomorrow as I'll meet the group en route... probably around this point;

Jason leaving Brackla at 9am so should be with you around 9:40 i guess.
-
Yeah, it's usually around 45 minutes depending on wind conditions.
I also found the following, I guess the main point would be Page 1 around the 17 mile mark for a time that they would be coming through the point at Caerleon (approx 13:40 to 13:46):

Ok, so I'll catch the group in the morning and let's hope for good weather.
-
I will be going , ride up with you and be returning early.
-
I'm going to drive up to abergavenny and watch the 10 laps with family in the evening. But still plan to be at brackla at 9am...probably won't stick with you through Newport but am sure plenty will know the way through. I reckon Kristian House will win but would love to see a youngster do it, especially a welsh one. Scott Davies maybe?
-
No way. Sky will flip a coin amongst themselves as to who will win. I reckon Geraint.
-
Geraint the obvious choice. Luke maybe a stronger finisher? But I hope anyone other than a sky rider (even welsh ones)
-
An each way bet on the Yates twins could be worth considering. I'll be cheering for Owain Doull to get the U-23.

I agree. I'm not a sky fan. Just can't see anyone else winning it.
-
Good ride today on Club run. Thanks to Steve for his route was interesting in places. LOL
Harpo and i didn't stop for the races we decided to come back o n A48 . Thanks to Harpo for the tow back he was flying.
-
Yes great day out and lots of miles. And a couple of very good coffee/food stops. Thanks to the group for pacing me back from Newport, especially Paul, Jason and Alan, much appreciated. And thanks again to Steve for the organising.
-
Did not see any oggies in abergavenny....must have been some though? Was quite easy to watch the race by the finish area. Saw a lot of sky riders plus the Yates bros and not a lot else. Daveys prediction of sky dominance was spot on!
-
We watched the race in Llangybi Rob, half way between Caerleon and Usk.

It's a good job you're not a gambler! ;D

Wayne, Neil, Haydn, Paul, Chris, Richard and myself left Brackla at 9am, picked up Allan in Brynna and Jason in Creigiau to do the planned route to Caerleon. My garmin didn't like junctions or roundabouts so we took a couple of wrong turns ( you might see us in the next episode of Police Camera Action ) Got to Caerleon in plenty of time so a nice coffee stop at the Priory. Wayne and Haydn needed to get back and the rest of us went on to Llangybi to watch the race. Allan then took over the navigation ( thank god ) and pulled us pretty much all the way home. 85 miles for me and back by 4pm to watch the live coverage on Eurosport, Thanks all for another great day out.
Tour next weekend!!

Harsh Davey...At least Kristian House finished! And Luke Rowe was my pick for Team Sky. Geraint was well off the pace and in no-mans land for a while. To be honest I never thought the race would split up let alone get shattered as it did. Sky must have put the hammer down from the start!
-
Sorry I didn't join you nationals club run lot. Combination of rain in night plus tired legs made me think I could do without all those steep climbs and descents that were mostly on the lanes...especially as I didn't plan to watch the race over that way anyway. Looks like you had a tough day in the saddle, though I guess watching the race would have broken it up a bit.
-
Thomas dropped his chain on the celtic manor climb apparently. It was always going to be a Sky carve up, I admire you optimism about a non world tour rider though! Think those days are over however, the UK national champs have gone to another level with all of the real pros we have now.
-
I see - he was reeling them back in at one point but was always gonna pay for the effort.
Hard to say whether the race is better or worse for sky's presence.
-
I like that we finally have a 'proper' champs, I dislike that sky vastly outnumber the other teams though. Imagine if just one or two of the Sky riders ride for a different team...far more interesting.
-
Good fun today. Finally Sussed a good route to the Usk Valley that bypasses Newport. Lucky with the weather too. Some typically strong climbing from Paul today, and Jason flying up the hills now. And of course, surely the poshest coffee stop in the club's history. A highlight had to be Richard being served those cow sandwiches that Desperate Dan wouldn't have complained about at Llangybi. Thanks for the company guys - let's hope the Nationals back again soon.
My each way bet would have paid out ;). Didn't pick Ed Lavarack for the U23, but good it was a Welsh rider.
