Title: New(ish) to the area, and want to join the biggest and best club around here.
Post by: Chopper1967 on June 12, 2019, 10:30:05 PM
I may have already introduced myself, but not sure. I recently moved to Ogmore Vale from the Midlands, and I've been a member of a number of clubs in the past.
I know you're the biggest, most established, and therefore in my opinion, the best club around here (I remember reading about OVW in Cycling Weekly some time ago!). Sincemoving here, with one thing and another, my cycling has taken a big hit, as I've had a fair bit of work to do in the house, and at best have been only managing 25 miles per week. I used to regularly put in 100 miles per week. As a result, my fitness has turned to fatness, and I'm trying to regain both my motivation and fitness.
I wish to join you guys, and was wondering if I could possibly tag along for a couple of Amblers rides, before I make a decision?
I know you meet up down Brackla on Sundays by Physiques Gym, but what time do the Amblers set off?

I can't ride this Sunday, as I'm doing the Alpe D'Bwlch.

Hi
The club rides all start at 9:00. Occasionally this may change if a longer ride is planned. The leader of the ride will then post on the forum. This usually only applies to the 'Pacers' group.
You are welcome to come along and join any of the rides on a trial basis for 3 rides. Club insurance covers this, after that you would have to join and arrange your own rider insurance
Hope to see you out soon

Thanks Andy.

So after the 3 trial basis rides, would I be paying the full membership fee for 12 months, let's say July 2019 to July 2020, or would it be to cover me till December 31st, and then I'd have to renew from 1st of January.

Also, does my membership fee include insurance?

Sorry for all the questions.

The membership fee would cover you until December. There's insurance included for the first 3 rides. After that you would need to look at your own insurance. Mainly for the public liability cover. Theres a couple of suppliers. I use British Cycling myself, as do quite a few others, there's also CTC which we have an affiliation with and can get a discounted rate with them. The link I have isn't working at the moment so I'll see what I can do if you need it.

Thanks Ben,

So I'd be better off waiting until December really then. I am a BC member, and that's up for renewal in December also.

Nothing to stop you joining now, membership is only £25 for the year.

I may be getting my wires crossed somewhere. I was under the impression that membership is from December to December (or January - January), and that if I joined now for £25, then I'd have to renew again in January again at a further £25.

I actually managed to meet up with the Amblers group on Sunday, so glad I did. Although few in numbers, we had a great ride. I'll tag along to a couple more Amblers rides, and then I'll join the club properly.

A few newbie questions.
1) does the 9am meet up time stay the same all through the year?
2) club kit, do you have special ordering "windows" when the club puts orders through, and anybody requiring club kit has to wait until then.

Looking forward to this Sunday's ride, that's if I manage to shift this cold/man flu!

The rides do start on a Sunday at 9am every week. Except for a month or two during Winter when it moves to 9.30 am.
There are windows for the club kit. Richard B tends to announce when it's due to open again. But there is a small stock of kit at the club house that may fit you. You can have a look at a meeting on a Friday night.
