Title: Lands End to John O'Groats Tandem 2018
Post by: Dave W on November 25, 2017, 05:40:56 PM
Me and Keith are planning to ride from Lands end to John O'Groats next year. We will doing this for the Guide dogs charity.

The dates are
20th Aug travel down to lands end Stay the evening
21st Aug start the epic ride
Return   30th Aug  9 days cycling 2 days traveling

The rough plan at the moment is Keith knows a man with a van which we can borrow and his Daughter will do some or all of the route. Plus my other half will do some driving this is to be finalised.
Keith is going to look into any sort of discount available from the guide dogs charity for the hotels near each stop.
Reason for posting is that if any of you are free and would like to do the whole route with us then please let us know within the next 2 weeks!!! This is when we will be looking to book the hotels and sort out transport.
Also of course any one is welcome to cycle with us on part of the route.

I've gone through most of the obvious routes and various websites for inspiration and the route which I have chosen is taken from the www.rideacrossbritain.com website

Day 1 Land's End – Okehampton roughly 107miles
Day 2 Okehampton to Bath roughly 110miles
Day 3 Bath to Ludlow roughly 99 miles
Day 4 Ludlow to Haydock roughly 105 miles
Day 5 Haydock to Penrith roughly 104 miles
Day 6 Penrith to Hamilton roughly 100 miles
Day 7 Hamilton to Fort William roughly 126 miles
Day 8 Fort William to Kyle of Sutherland 110 miles
Day 9 Kyle of Sutherland to John O' Groats 104 miles

Total distance 965 miles  ;D

Once everything is booked up and confirmed I'll be setting up a Justgiving page and a blog

Awesome challenge Dave and Keith. I'll look into joining you for part of the ride. But I couldn't do the full ride. The wife won't let me.

Is that route the uphill one, always thought the other way would be easier. Booking a bed is difficult, did have the book and route hanging about. Plenty of time to think it all out. See you later.

2018 happy new year everyone. Any other takers fancy a new goal for the year?

Hotels are now booked for LeJog so there is no backing out. I think the riding will be easier than booking hotels, didn't think Cornwall and Devon would be so busy at that time of year.

here is the Just giving page
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tandemlejog2018

over the next few months we could organise a fundraising night at the club.

Well it's finally time to start packing for the 9 day cycling holiday starting from lands end in Cornwall. Driving down tomorrow.
Keith is like a kid at Christmas though I'm not sure if that's for the cycling or for the amount of Cornish pasties he can eat on day one.

Thanks to everyone for their support
Here is the charity page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tandemlejog2018

All money raised is going to the charity.

Eat a few pasties 🥟Keith, just put a few extra pounds in the rear tyre, always worked for me. Good luck on your trip both, look forward to your tales on your escape from Scotland.

For those who can make it tomorrow, Steve C and I are going to meet them in Chepstow at 1030. We are going on the train ( meet us at Bridgend at 0850) or you can drive to Chepstow and park up if you wish. Apart from offering our support, we will be able to ride on roads we don't normally get a chance to go on!

Time to give you an update on how we're getting on
Day one https://www.relive.cc/view/1787962469
We set off on the Monday to drive down to land ends staying about 5 miles from the start. On Tuesday for the start the weather was thick fog which cleared just in time for the photograph at the signpost. Which is £10 for 2 copies. Good pace setting off and it is lumpy in Cornwall.

Day 2 https://www.relive.cc/view/1790213059
Less lumps compared to day 1 but just seemed to go on longer. The highlight of the trip now for Keith is how much can he eat on the bike. And when is the next food stop. The highlight of the day was going up and over cheddar gorge.

Day 3 https://www.relive.cc/view/1792222958
Coming out of bath was a tough climb i underestimated how long that climb was for the timing to meet Mr madeley and Mr Curry in chepstow. Keith forgot his Mars bar today which were delivered to him yesterday all 48 of them. Was nice to ride with them both for some more encouragement and advice .
Some cheeky climbs today.the rear tyre blew out 2 miles from our hotel. Support crew miles away which meant a 2 mile walk. Both still going strong keeping a steady pace...new tyre on and ready for tomorrow's ride where mal will be riding with us.

Day 4 done. Mal joined us for the first 20 miles which contained all the hills. Good to have a chat along the way.
We tried dodging the showers and got caught in 3 showers. Both going well.Keith is being well fed has you can see from the pictures.by about 30 miles in his concentration turns to what are we having for dinner and when are we stopping

Day 5 Haydock to Penrith
https://www.relive.cc/view/1796830402
It was nice leaving haydock and moving further north. The scenery was constantly changing with the Lake District looming on the left. We made good time into kendal then we had the climb out of kendal over shap. Keith is still enjoying his food en route.

Day 6 Penrith to Glasgow.
https://www.relive.cc/view/1799294145
Watching the weather report Sunday was going to be a wet day and low temperatures. It wasn't too bad starting off with light rain but damp. The route today went up along side the A74. The road surface was great and it was like having the road to ourselves we had hardly any cars pass us. It was great to cross the border into Scotland. Today ride was quick with our fastest average of the week at 18mph.
Only 3 days to go. 8)

Day 7 Glasgow to Fort William
https://www.relive.cc/view/1801221931
Started off in Glasgow was fun navigating through the town.
The constant head wind didn't help meaning it felt like a slow tough slog. The scenery changed quickly from a city to the highlands then dropping down to the coast.

Day 8 Fort William to Invershin
https://www.relive.cc/view/1803571671
The weather today was over cast with mostly a tail wind which helped in places epically for the climb out of loch Ness. Didn't realise how big loch ness is. The miles flew by today where most of the scenery was taken up with different Lochs.
Keith still going strong on his strict diet of steak and chips and No vegatables ::)

Day 9 is here only 103miles to go seems like ages ago since we set off from Land's End.
