I have mentioned this at a club night a good couple of months back but if there are enough numbers I would like to try and organise a private session for the club at the Velodrome in Newport. This would be the best way for anyone interested in track cycling to get into it as you will have all the basics covered in this session and depending on how you got on you might be able to attend some drop in sessions in preparation for your track accreditation.
Could you please post your interest below, and if we have enough numbers I'll take a look at what dates are available.

I'm up for it, been a while!
-
I'd be interested however it would need to be an evening or weekend as I start work early.
-
Yes I'll give it a go
It's got to be safer than road cycling!??
:-\

Maybe:

Definitely interested! would need to book the time off work tho.
-
So long as I can get the time off work then I will be up for this.
Thanks for looking in to this Paul.
-
;D count me in for this ... no ice, frost or rain... got to be worth a go!

Thanks for showing interest everyone, we're going to need at least 10 - 15 riders to make it affordable though. Be good to have a couple more of you join us. I really enjoyed going to Newport last year and would never have thought riding around in circles could be so much fun. The sessions can cater a variety of fitness levels and ages, and it's more social than any other form of cycling as you have chance to have a talk when you're waiting to go back out in between exercises.
If we do the taster session we won't be smashing it around the track it will be more focussed on learning about how the track works and getting used to riding on the bank, with perhaps a couple of laps riding as a group and taking turns on the front at the end of the session. A lot of clubs regularly use the facility (I was sharing some track time with Cwmcarn tonight) and it would be great to see some OVW jerseys going round.

I'll join in too to help with the numbers but again dependent on timing and getting time off work.
-
A friend from work is very interested too
-
I'd love to come along, would just need to pick a date free of other commitments.
-
Yep, I'll come along too - have my accreditation now so need to practice for Wed am's - first time out this week was tough!
-
Fairplay Steve that's great. I'm going to try and pop along Wednesday coming so hope you can make it.

I'd have a go too if it's still going ahead ?
-
Still hope to go ahead with this, there is a committee meeting on Friday so hope to have a chat about it then. I've been looking at some times that could work for us thinking 8pm - 10pm if it was mid week or possibly a weekend but these are few and far between. Had a good session last Wednesday with Toestrapsteve, good fun riding around with another oggie! Thanks for showing an interest everyone.

I've got some dates that we can book at the Velodrome. I would like to move quickly on this as they get booked up quite quickly. So if you could reply with preferred option (A,B,C,D,E) that would be great. I had to look at Sundays as they were booked up for evening slots during the week so I hope that's OK. There is a Wednesday in July if we're happy to wait until then!
A. Wednesday 5th July 8pm - 10pm
B. Sunday 7th May 12 -2pm
C. Sunday 11th June 7pm - 9pm
D. Sunday 18th June 7-9pm
E. Sunday 25th June 7-9pm
We're looking at just paying for bike hire at the moment which we can do on the day which will cost around £10 - £11 fantastic deal so I hope that the club has worked out for us so hopefully we can get a good crowd together. I know from having a chat on a Sunday that there are a few of the guys who were interested but haven't posted on this thread so if you're interested it would be great if you could spread the word too.

D 1st choice
A as alternate
Thanks for your efforts sorting it out
-
I could probably make any of those dates.
Thanks for sorting this Paul.
-
Any of the Sundays for me, i would have to book a holiday to get the Wednesday night off. Thanks Paul
-
any of those time are fine for me :)
-
If they cater for OAPs I'd love to have a go if only to makeup the numbers we need
-
B or A for me Paul. The arrival of little Langley at the end of May might mean the others are a bit touch and go. Cheers for sorting
-
Cheers Paul - all good for me although Sun May 7th a little tight for those riding R25/7 TT in the morning - will we DIY the session or get a coach in the deal?
Thanks for organising mate
-
Cheers Paul -
11th June is the Dragon Ride which will put me out of action for at least a few days anyway.
Option D or E otherwise but we too are due to have a baby on the 20th June (of all dates)!
But happy to go with the flow
-
All good for me apart from June 11th,when I am likely to be whinging a lot post dragon!
Thanks Paul
Safer than the road-apparently not from what Andy H has told me,leg splinters the size of canoes and other horrors seen online!!
-
Going for the 18th of June 7pm-19pm
-
;D count me in on this Paul ;D
18th June is fine
-
Sorry Craig I'm having a bit of trouble with this as Newport have got back to me to say that all the Sundays are now not available, could be because we will need a coach.
I'm limited to option A off the list:
Wednesday 5th July 8-10pm
Could you guys get back to me to see if that works for you be good to have an idea of numbers!

Newport have now confirmed our booking for Wednesday the 5th of July 8:00pm - 10:00pm It's a great opportunity to have a go at track cycling, the club is covering the cost of hire so the only cost is bike hire which is around £9 mark (I will confirm this) if you have your own track bike there is no additional cost. Only other things required will be:
Helmet
Gloves
Shoes with Look Keo cleats (I have a few spare if some of you need to borrow)
You can use the hire bikes which have toe straps
Bring a water bottle/Gels/Food (There will be a short break between sessions to have a quick swig)
I have told them the group is of mixed ability (more on the side of beginners) It's an introduction to the track and a chance to socialize do something a bit different and learn some new skills.
Weather is guaranteed to be dry and warm with no wind :) Thank you everyone who has shown an interest in attending it would be great if I could get a list of you who will definitely attending

Track day this Wednesday! If you can be there at 7:30ish ready to ride that should give us plenty of time to hire bikes at reception and pick them up. This is the address for your satnav: Newport Sports Village, Newport, NP19 4RA. I think I posted a while back what kit you need to bring but here it is again:
Helmet (without any attachments, Visor, camera etc)
Gloves
Cycling shorts/leggings
Jersey/T-shirt, shoulders must be covered
You can wear your skin suit too
Cycling shoes with Look Keo Cleats (or Trainers if you want to use a bike with toe straps)
Water bottle (it gets warm & dry)
Food
Towel (showers are available)
Hopefully you can all still make it, if there are a couple of you who would like to join us it is not too late the club has hired the track for us so all you need to do is hire a bike on the night it's a great opportunity to try you're hand at track cycling. I have told them that this is a group of mixed ability riders and for a lot of you it will be your first time so the coach will split us into groups based on that. The emphasis is on us having a safe fun session riding with club mates of the same ability. Any questions let me know PM or post it here.
Hope to see you all on Wednesday.

-
Thanks for arranging that. It was quite an experience well worth the effort of going to Newport. Big thumbs up
-
Big thanks to everyone who was able to attend. We had a decent sized group on the (very hot!) night, everyone got on really well and I was surprised they had us riding right at the top of the track so quickly (I don't remember doing that on my first visit!) Fairplay to Greg who was leading us around, if it was me I would have been bricking it!
Hope it was what everyone was expecting I was a bit worried afterwards that the two drills we did were a bit harder than I had advertised, in fairness the first drill was hard because we were riding along at a fair lick - so when it came time to do a lap it was more like a lap and a half! I struggled on the last effort. The 500m sprint is a hard effort too thats the first time I had tried them like that, usually you go off the front of the group as it rolls around on the blue line. Hope you could see the benefits of training on the track, excellent for Team TT training getting used to riding on the wheel and chaingang. I really enjoyed the night and had a big grin on my face at the back of the line watching everyone putting in a good performance.
Next time we could look to tailor the session more to our needs, so maybe not so much sprinting!
