I won't be riding this on Sunday so if anyone wants a free ride in this let me know, I'll be picking up the race pack on Friday so if anyone wants it I can drop it up the club or meet you some where, it would be a shame to see it go to waste.
-
Guys, massive favour about to be asked. I have club kit waiting for me at the club house (arm warmers and gloves) but I can't make club night 2moro as I'll be out celebrating my 30th! Would anyone in the Bridgend and surrounding area be able to grab them and keep, and I can come and pick up from them on Saturday? Would love to wear them on Sunday. Let me know if you could help out
Thanks
-
I will be going down on Friday and can collect for you, I'm in Pencoed if you want to pick up or i can take on Sunday for you. Let me know
-
Nige that'd be great if you could. I'd prefer to pick them up Saturday if that's ok, save you having to bring extra stuff on Sunday as well. Do you want to send me a text on 07725081729 and we'll sort it out. Thanks a lot

My start time at 7.10 (I didn't manage to use my password access in time). I'm hoping you'll all smuggle me into pen C so I can start with you at 7.04, as I don't really fancy having to chase down 6 minutes (minimum) to catch you. Very keen to ride with the club this year as my pacemaking was dreadful last year (too fast too soon) and the last 40 miles were a solo TT.
If the number police are on duty (or other riders are getting shirty about queue jumping), I'll ride out onto the course ahead of you and forsake an official time, and join you as you pass through the first industrial estate.
-
I'm starting at 7:10 too so could give you a tow up to everyone else if it doesn't work out. Are there any plans for the club to meet up before hand?
-
It's pen B, Allan - on High Street - not sure if marshalls will have memorised numbers for each pen? Paul will catch us no doubt, if you can hang onto his wheel!
-
Suggestion, lets assemble at the back of Pen B...
-
I'll play it by ear. I'll try to get to Pen B with you guys (and Paul too). If that fails then I'll take a tow from Paul - hopefully I can hang on :P
Feeling anxious - not trained for the distance, or done enough climbing. I'll have come up with several other excuses as well by Sunday morning. Looking forward to seeing the OVW out in strength though.
-
Tidy I'll aim to get to pen b too about 6:15ish see who's about. Is there a map floating about showing where all the pens are?

Good luck tomorow and stay safe on those decents! Enjoy, team OVW will smash it

My first Velothon and an amazing experience! An early start with a fast bunch meant we covered 25 miles in the first hour! It got a bit lumpy and so 21 miles in hour 2. We had split into a few groups at this point. Then the heavens opened just as we started to climb The Tumble. Felt very cold to the point that I was struggling to change gear. Grovelled to Caerphilly and had just enough for the climb. Well organised and constantly surprised by the amount of people on the roadside shouting encouragement.
-
Any idea who was shouting "ogies" on the top of Caerphilly mountain? I had taken my specs off by then (so blind as a bat) and could only muster a wince in appreciation!
-
Was a good ride...loads off people out a lot of them were shouting ogy ogy then oi oi
Time to pre register for next year
-
Good ride , and as Steve said at Tumble got soaked then on decent very cold feet and fingers stayed cold rest of the ride...improved by 40 Min's on last year so thanks to all I rode with today pulled me along and I hope I helped some of you at times. Glad it was down hill from Caerphilly was hurting a bit from there. Crowd fantastic and well organized event.
-
All smiles at the start!
-
Well done Paul, 73rd! Top 20 target for next year?
-
Thanks Steven, we'll see. Maybe I won't stop to put my jacket on next year! I think start times make a bit of a difference too, the guys off in the first pen seemed to be riding it as a team effort/race, which is much more sensible than starting off at the back and smashing it through the crowds. I wrecked myself trying to catch you guys, and found that I was full gas for the first section and mostly on my own. On the few occasions a couple of us worked together I always found I had to do longer harder turns on the front to keep it moving along. Great crowd though, and constantly being pushed on by other riders appreciating the hard work. Felt a lot more camaraderie than Sportives I have done a couple of years back. Riding a lot more sensible than the couple of road races I have done too!
I hooked up with Steve at the end who was smashing it. Awesome riding and great to meet up with an OVW shirt and drop straight into 2up TT on the way to Caerphilly mountain.
I would imagine a top 20 place would take a huge effort, kudos to the winner who made a break with 60km left to go!

Good day out for almost everyone (sorry to see Allan punctured,Lee hiding in a hedgerow never to be seen again, and Steve C needing a large box of tissues)
What a cracking Team OVW start, nearly 23mph for me first 50miles,absolutely awesome
Chapeau to the top pacers coming in around 4 hours,we'll need a fourth Sunday club ride group "Velothon supercharged racers"
Thanks everyone,an enjoyable day out on the bike!
-
You can find someone else to route plan for that group!! 😱😂😱😂
-
kudos to the winner who made a break with 60km left to go!
Shouldn't the "winner" of this non-competitive ride, clearly treating it as a race, have entered the road race a little later in the day though...especially being a sponsored rider? Not that he was doing any harm. Don't they have events on the continent where the race and open event are pretty much as one? I reckon a typical 3rd cat road race would outturn a slightly higher ave speed than the best velothon sportive time. Haven't checked but guessing the professionals averaged well over 25mph.
-
25.11mph
-
vs 23.9mph by fastest sportiver!

-
Did the race do the tumble twice again?
-
23.5mph I think for the sportive...still suggests given 60km solo that he'd have been comfortable in the race....his ave HR of just 148bpm would suggest likewise.

Team result is up
http://www.velothon-wales.co.uk/en/results/2016-results/team-challenge/
-
Hey guys - not too bad a result in the team standings !!
I checked last year and OVW finished 30th team (not 20th as I thought from memory) and so a good improvement. But, Paul's great ride is not part of the result ... if his ride was included the team would have been 7th if my quick maths is good (the total team time would have been around 20hrs 48 mins).
-
I have asked them to change my entry they said it would appear in the next couple of days, I asked on Sunday.
-
That is a great team result! Very pleased I was only a few minutes behind ☺
-
Great result,.....very pleased that i was only a few minutes behind also
-
behind what?

So found someone's GoPro video on YouTube....
http://youtu.be/urYx59RFVZw
He goes past an Oggie at about 11mins 50, then rides with Paul for a bit around 14 minutes in, then Harpo is with him into Cardiff and over the finishing line....watch on to see who takes the sprint on the line? Place your bets now 😉
-
Excellent video and good music to go with it.
Some heart in my mouth moments watching the riders on wet roads with pot hoes and drain covers.
-
Good to see the oggies on channel 4 this morning (Velothon Wales), it's available on catch up if you missed it.
-
Good footage and welcome distraction domestic chores ::)
Nice shot of the Oggies at the start
-
Spotted Harpo and John the Engine in the pre - Tumble shots!
